has anyone tried this?

looks pretty much what i-tunes must be like. not sure how much content there is, but it looks like its got a fair bit.

basically 99p a song, slightly cheaper if you buy in bulk (24 for £20)

anyway, i've just bought £20s worth to try it out - just downloaded kylie's new song and a couple of others.

very fast - and if they were typical speeds and reliability it might not be too bad.

certainly eliminates the hit and miss thing with the like of kazaa.

It is actually very expensive 24 songs for £20.00 I could get a compilation album with 20+ songs on it for £9.98 in Tesco's, a complete rip off.

Yes, but these songs are not all going to be songs you like, which you have hand picked. So given you can choose favourite tracks it's not priced too badly. However the problem i have with these clubs is they simply don't have a big enough choice.

oh come on - thats hardly a reasonable comparison.

a typical album works out at more than 99p a track, surely? especially in the likes of virgin and hmv. (although, yes - independent record shops are usually cheaper.)

I don't think it's very good value for downloading a whole album, but it's good for downloading the latest tracks by different artists.

BTW I don't count Kylie as an artist whatsoever, as ARTISTS create ther own masterpieces.

Just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean you have to lose your top. I think its a complete rip off and I am still using Kazaa Lite. which is free. I would never pay 99p to download a record I would go out and pay £3.99 for a CD single.

when you say *lose my top*, aren't you being ever so slightly hypersensitive and melodramatic......?

sure, kazaa lite is free, but its illegal, and it can be a real hit and miss affair.

99p is a rip off, but £3.99 for a cd singler isn't?

Baring in mind on a CD single you get on average about 4 songs thats about a pound each, plus you dont have to go to the bother of illegally having copy a CD.

but usually you only really want one of those songs. and if you pay 99p to download it, its not illegal.

i'm starting to think we're over analysing this now tho'.

Uh huh its turnign into another file sharing legality thread. On MSN today they constantly have links to download music for about 79p.

just looking at it again - you can download whole albums for £7.99, including, for example, David Bowie's 37 track Best of..., or some new albums like Starsailor's *silence is easy*, which doesn't seem to bad, again eliminating the hit and miss of kazaa.

or if you take out a £10 a month subscription, that would get you 1600 credits, or up to two whole albums - which seems pretty decent.

It's a bit pricey for 99p per song, and there's all that DRM crap attached to it as well.

I think the whole thing of paying £4 for a single and £11-20 for an album in the shops is a complete rip-off. An CD costs no more than 50p to make and the case and printing of the booklet/inside covers also costs probably no more than 50p. So a quid in total.

I'm sure if they lowered the prices much more (e.g £1.50 / £1.99 for a single) and £5 for an album/compilation then people would start buying CD's again.

i think £10 is reasonable for an album. the MSN thing is cheaper than 99p a song if you download an album, or if you buy credits in bulk.

i stuck in £20's worth and downloaded 37 tracks of Bowie's greatest hits for £6.67 for example, and it only took about 15-20 minutes on a 1Mbit connection.

i guess what i'm driving at, is that this seems better than the original barrage of legal download sites were, in terms of price, and if they take off, are only likely to get that bit cheaper.

factor in their reliability over kazaa and you start to have a viable, cheaper alternative to virgin etc.
