So watching guys you don't know for about 5 minutes on the telly on a Saturday night just because they "look good" is your idea of entertainment?

Okay then..................

I find her as really down to earth and somebody the average viewer can relate to. I find the other three to into themselves.

Dude it works both ways. Look at Zoo and Nuts. I bet there are loads of guys who completely fall over sideways and inside out when they see female singers.

It's like (this just came to me) people who read the Sport and say it's for the articles but it's in fact for the girls and what not. I remember my mate was well into Mariah Carey and had his whole computer adorned with Mariah Carey sounds and well a whole theme around her.

He never liked her singing. He just fancied her but there is a divide between a fit girl and her singing. If you like her singing, you buy the cd and remain objective to the quality and nature of music. If you like the girl - you'll spend your life around her.

Zoo and Nuts aren't talent competitions , unless you count stripping down to your underwear or nothing as a talent.

Yes I know that the X factor may not always show signs of being a talent competition and is an entertainment show but the aim actually is to find a new artist , highlighted by the 1 million pound record deal prize at the end getting annoyed just because there are more girls in the show than boys is a little ridiculous in my opinion.

Nope , just found it odd that someone would get annoyed at the fact that there are more girls than boys in a singing competition. I just thought that if you watch the X Factor purely for the fit males then there could be other ways of getting that kind of entertainment since the X factor is not a modelling competition!

I didn't say that you shouldn't post your opinion , I don't know where you extrapolated that from. However if I disagree with something surely I'm allowed to respond with my opinion , after all this is a forum , open for debate

I wouldn't call it talent. I'd say it's the ability to fool the masses as much as you can and give them what they want. People underestimate TV. In fact, I don't think it's underestimate - people survive and thrive and live through TV and believe it undoubtedly. Where I see TV as just a TV, many people still see being on TV as something huge.

There are lots of singers out there but the manipulation of X Factor is, as illustrated, the "big break" illusion (when in fact singers earn a living as singing, which is why they are singers because they sing for a living and this "big break" is in fact a massive business and marketing ploy created to give people jobs and industry by making an illusion around a group.

Now, that last paragraph - that is what Simon is in the business of. Making people believe they want something (in this case somebody) that they don't really need.”

Whether it is a manipulation by the media is neither her nor there I don't think you can deny that the XF and shows like Pop Idol have given certain people their big break - maybe they would have been as successful without the XF maybe not. I honestly don't get what the issue is with it. So what if its manipulated for me personally it does what I expect it provides me with some entertainment a distraction away from the mundaness of life.

Not viewing those singers as having talent is your prerogative just as it is mine and others to believe they do have talent.

In regards to your last paragraph isn't that the premise around almost everything. There are very few things in this world we actually need - bar food and shelter.

Is there a possible way to talk about one without referring to the other?

The point is they use Zoo and Nuts in the same way girls would use X Factor to eye up men as boys would use the X Factor to eye up women. It's like the example I gave you.

If you like a band or an artist, especially a singer, it would be odd to say you like every single song they do because the music is produced and engineered and made by somebody other than the singer who just, sings while everything else is done by somebody else.

So in relation to the point of the thread, that people take it too seriously beyond the singing.

I think at first, with Pop Stars/Pop Idol/Pop Stars the Rivals etc it was all fresh and new and the format worked. Although I still love to watch these programmes, including American Idol, Britain's Got Talent.......the format is now looking very tired - Simon, it must be said, is hamming it up so much he deserves an Oscar, all the old crappola about that kid the other night who was discarded and then Simon decides he's made a mistake and runs after him, it's all been done to death before, don't they think we know that?

Half the people disappear without a trace now anyway, unless Simon takes a particular interest in their case and pushes them all the way.

He just gives people what they want or need. Some people jsut want a big stage non-stop show on Saturday nights and some drama.

Others desperately need somebody new on TV to cling to and gain a relationship with.

This is partly what this thread is about.

You will find people who see the show as entertainment but anybody who takes the show very seriously, almost clinically will find it difficult to handle an objective view, a different perspective and importantly a strong opinion.

There is nobody on this show that will rival who I admire as an artist already in the world today. I think Diana Vickers is the most unique girl in that lot and with the best voice as well - the rest are so generic and what we have heard before.

I hear the names Whitney and Mariah pop up regularly. It's like they're good singers but there are girls with power voices all over the place. It's all about getting and opportunity to be used by a record company. Very few of these singers make money like somebody like Madonna has. Some fall into debt due to bad contracts and being pushed around by record companies - but people see the glam and glitz and quickly say money money money because that's the association that the shows, the power of TV affects the public.

Forget Mariah and Whitney; give me Chrissie Hynde, Mazzy Starr, Fiona Apple etc any day of the week. Now they are musicians not random power voices who rely upon a record company to give them backing tracks.
