Hi, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with making a complaint about their vet?

I lost my cat last week and only found out towards the end of her life that the senior vet didn't agree with how she had been treated by one of the other vets and actually said he would have handled things differently. I feel angry that she may have been misdiagnosed and wonder if she would still have been with us if she had seen someone else.

I would just to like to know if anyone else has gone through this and how they dealt with it.

I have made a complaint about the vet that used treat my cat.

To cuta long story short, she was an absolute b*ch when my cat was spayed. She was extremely rough to my cat, and didn't seem to care about animals.

As the vet worked for a very well name pets store, I complained to their head office. They were absolutely brilliant and very apologetic. The vet in question was told to call me and apologise, which she did. It is also put on my cat's file that the vet is prohibited from treating my cat.

If your vet has a head office, then try other maybe the regulatory body for vets, British Vets Association.

i complained about my vet, i took my cat as he was not eatting and when he did he cried, i had tablets etc and was told to bring him back in 2 week's. i took him back after one week as he was not eating and very thin. the vet looked him over left the room returned 10 mins later to inform me i was being reported for mistreatment of my cat. i turned the air blue and insisted he checked the computer, he did and realised i had been in a week before. it turned out the cat had throat cancer and had to be put down, no sorry just a big bill, that went unpaid then court. the court i'am pleased to say throw it out and the for said vet left the area. i also found a new vet who was not money driven and was very good.

I made a complaint to an out of hours vet a few years ago after they examined my cat who had given birth that day. They checked her stomach and said her uterus was going back to its normal size. Turned out a week later, when she went into labour for a second time, it hadn't at all! I'd been right when I was convinced there was still another kitten in there. I'll never know if that kitten would have lived if they'd handled her properly when I took her in. As it is the kitten got stuck and was dead before it was born. They did offer to refund the consultation fee, which I never chased up, because at the time I (wrongly) believed it to be a charity organisation and didn't feel it was right to take the money back. I regretted that when I found out I was wrong. Sometimes I wish I'd taken it further, but at the time I was too upset and not thinking straight.

Thanks for your replies. Once I've collected her ashes (in a lovely little cat ornament) I'm going to ask for copies of her records and relevant blood tests. I presume as I've paid for her treatments I will be entitled to them. I'm then planning to contact the Royal College of Vetinary Surgeons and see what to do from there on.

It's a sad time but I don't want to just ignore this and let someone else go through the same thing as we have if I can help it.

Jojo, sorry again to hear about your loss but please take into consideration you are grieving right now.

Vet's have a much more difficult job in some respects because thier 'patients' cannot talk so the potential for misdiognosis is sadly much greater.

It of course depends on how strongly you feel about the matter of the misdiognosis and would it have really prolonged her life and made her much better if she had received the "correct" treatment.

By all means put it in writing etc.... but it wont bring her back hun

I know I'm still grieving but I'm not doing this out of revenge or anything like that so don't worry. This vet has had problems before (even my mum-in-law changed vets a few years ago because of him) but because we were rarely at the vets I didn't feel the need to change. Unfortunately when she first appeared ill 3 months ago I didn't get an option of whom I would see. When I have needed the vet recently it has been on an emergency basis and just by luck of the draw with one exception it was him. When I did see the senior vet the night before she passed he himself seemed disappointed at the way the other vet had handled things.

I'll wait until a few weeks until I get her notes and write a letter to the senior vet just to ask them to please review things so this doesn't happen to someone else.
