So - are there any ringers this year?
droogiefret

Overall I was pleased with the final 12 - can't see any obvious ringers (though I'm fairly gullible).

Everyone agree it's a level playing field or do we have reservations?

WTF is a "ringer"?

I am assuming a ringer is someone invited to audition who is known by the judges to be good enough to have a recording career like someone a year or so ago?

Oh - someone the judges had planned for the final show ahead of the audition process.

I have a suspicion about Austin, what with his previous experiences - wouldn't be surprised if he has an agent who's approached X Factor prior to the auditions.

Laura is definitely a ringer. Austin is as well and maybe JLS and without any doubt at all, Alexandera.

Oh right, thanks!
Think Austin could be one just because of his past in reality TV and the fact people starting standing up and cheering him at Boot Camp.
That didn't happen to any of the other singers IIRC

I think its a level playing field

OK I just had a look on the main X Factor site and found this:

http://xfactor.itv.com/stories/story...tem_100227.htm

Here are a few snippets:

Quote:
“Alexandra Burke

Alexandra from north London has four brothers, a sister, and lives with her mum who used to sing with Soul II Soul.

Alexandra started singing at the age of five and when she was 9 yrs old she was passed the microphone at one of her mother’s gigs. Everyone loved her and from that moment onwards she was hooked on performing. Aged 12 Alexandra entered Star for a Night. She was the youngest person in the competition and was beaten to first place by Joss Stone.

Since leaving school, Alexandra has pursued a career in music. In 2005 she auditioned for The X Factor and got through to the Judges Houses stage. However, Louis said she was too young and ended her X Factor dream in Dublin.

Alexandra has had no professional vocal training and learnt to sing from her mother. Recently she went on tour with Young Voices, a charity that raises money for children with Leukaemia, performing at The Royal Albert Hall, Dublin Point Theatre and the MEN Arena.”

Quote:
“Austin Drage

Essex born, Austin first starting singing when he was very young and at school, he enjoyed taking part in musical theatre and amateur dramatics. After leaving school, Austin found an agent and has had appearances in Snatch, The Bill, Casualty and other TV programmes.

At 17, Austin was part of a boyband called Five Boys. During this time, they supported Lemar, Westlife, Shola Ama, Girls Aloud and Blazing Squad. The band unfortunately didn’t get anywhere so they split and when Austin auditioned for McFly (he was upset to be told he was too ugly). After another failed attempt with another band, Austin took part in Boys will be Girls, an E4 TV show. They recorded one song which was released on the E4 website.

Most recently, Austin has been a member of a glam rock band called The Revamps who have been performing locally and taking part in charity events.
”

Quote:
“Eoghan Quigg

Singing since the age of two along to Disney cartoons, Eoghan would love to be the male equivalent of an Irish Leona Lewis. He found his voice whilst singing with the school choir and from then on, sang all the lead roles in the school musicals. Justin Timberlake is Eoghan’s idol and he got to the finals of Irish School Stars in their Eyes two years ago”

Now check this:

Quote:
“Ruth

At twelve years old, Ruth moved to America with her family and this was the first time she had the opportunity to get involved with music at school. She took every music, theatre, dance and choir lesson going and all of her teachers encouraged her. She was put into competitions and played lead roles in My Fair Lady and Phantom of the Opera. The family moved back to Spain when Ruth was 16 and although Ruth had taken some singing lessons by this point, she had to give them up due to the financial difficulties her family were having. Ruth gave up on her dream as it was becoming clear that it would never be something that would pay the bills.

Ruth joined a rock band when she was 19; This was a new challenge because she had only ever sung classical music. Ruth made the decision that she would give up her job at the family business and follow her dream once again. The band became very close as the toured Spain and Ruth stayed with them for 3 years. After playing countless hotels and bars the group decided to split up.

Ruth now dates the guitarist, Juanma and the duo landed a permanent contract for Polaris World where as well as performing, Ruth works as a PR consultant and Juanma is the Director of Entertainment.”

There are some other connections to the media amongst some on the site. For some there is almost nothing at all. I think Austin and Alexandera with the amount of airtime given and the amount of PR connections they've had looks... shady.

Like this from JLS

“Aston met Marvin whilst auditioning for a TV advert.”

There are some more media connection illustrated in JLS'

By the bold type do you think this means they could be ringers? I believe that most of the 12 would of sung in shows and the odd club or two. You cannot expect 12 bathroom singers to be able to make it to the finals.

The bold indicates the associations one would have to make after or before appearing in major situations and even the PR relationships indicated - like being a daughter or a friend of somebody in the business.

I don't understand the connection. AS someone else said, you wouldn't expect 12 bathroom singers to be in the final of the X factor. A contract at Polaris World is the equivilant of singing at Butlins.

Austin got to bootcamp last year. If they were so anxious to promote him, why wasn't he put through last year instead of Andy or Leon?

Similarly Alexandra could have gone through three years ago instead of Chenai if connections in the industry meant that much.

As for Eoghan, he's 15 FGS. How much history could he have? So what if he won the Irish Stars in their Eyes? They all have to start somewhere.

Will Young had been trying to get his break in the media for several years before he did Pop Idol. Shock Horror.

Alexandra has just gone away and worked hard, gigging, back up singing, trying to work on demos and earning a living e.g.

http://www.soul-explosion.com/musicians.htm

Yes she's friends with Joss Stone, yes her mother was lead singer with Soul II Soul, but why should that preclude her from entering when it is her dream and she is clearly extremely talented?

The UK record industry has an appalling track record in finding, funding and promoting female black singers. For some no matter how many people you may know, the hurdles remain in place.

A few acts each year may make it this way but the acts who the producers seriously want to make it to the final stages of the live shows are known beforehand. Firstly they put in a few that they know will struggle in live shows for the entertainment bit & also to make sure that the ones that they want get there. Doesn't always happen & you can tell when an act is progressing too far as all sorts of tactics come out. Poor songs / poor VT's / poor judges comments - particularly Simon. It has happened since 1st series with G4 & numerous others since.

In terms of the ringer for this year - media reporting it as Alexandra.

Even if you don't get specifically invited, lets be honest, if you turn up and tell them you have previous media experience, that will be a huge tick against your name.

Everything you said doesn't remove the fact that connections in the media are made and therefore these connections are ever present in the top 12.

But then at the same time two people who had media connections, Cheryls mate from pop idol the Rivals and Leona's
mate, forget his name , didn't get through to the live shows. It's easy to say it's all a fix but there's no real proof.

I am going to assume from this thread that none of you have any more "dirt" on the final 12 and that we appear not to have a repeat of last year when an act with a previous career (major label album + billboard chart hit single) was up against a karaoke novice (although justice was done IMO).
I suppose we should be thankful for that......

If they wanted Austin so badly, why didn't they put him in Futureproof? You'd have thought a repeated ex-boyband member would have been the first bootcamp constant to be called back.

In my opinion, the contestants are not rigged. They all want to be in the business very badly, so they attend every possible audition going. They eventually get a lucky break. Whilst it's not a completely even playing field (They choose contestants clearly for their story, looks or audience appeal like Shaun).

If you wanted to be a movie star, you'd attend auditions for every single part going. Does it make you a lesser person for eventually making it? Nope
