Connecting up a Video Recorder to Sky

Am I right in saying that the connection goes like this:

TV
(scart)
SKY

SKY
(scart)
Video

If the video is just plugged into sky, then what channel do you put the tv or sky on to view the video, to then tune sky into it?

I don't use video anymore, this is for my friend which I am going to sort tomorrow. I just don't get it'd work?! My dvd is plugged into my sky box and as soon as you take the dvd out of standby, it appears on screen, but with video I know it'd be different.

Thanks

The wiring is correct. just make sure that the SCART plugs are connected to the correct sockets on the Sky box. You don't need to tune the TV. Put the TV on to the appropriate AV Channel input. i.e. AV1 / AV2 etc

The Sky box takes care of routing the VCR signal to the TV when you press Play. Make sure the VCR is set to its AV channel so it can record from Sky.

There are a couple of things to check for best performance...

1. Look at the TV manual or the back of the set to see which SCART socket is RGB input capable.

2. Set the Sky box from PAL to RGB, (Service menu > Picture settings) and remember to Save the settings before exiting.

3. Remember that for VCR timer recording that the VCR channel needs to be set to AV in the programming menu.

so if the sky box is on, and i turn the video to channel AV1 then sky shud still appear on screen right which enables me to press record when I want to.

My friend said he was able to see a video he was playing on screen but no sound. i find that strange.

Yes, but don't forget to check all the SCARTs are in the correct sockets. The common mistake is connecting a SCART into the decoder socket on the VCR.

If there is picture but no sound then some common causes are:

SCART cable only partially connected
wrong type of SCART lead - i.e. not fully wired
bent pins on the SCART socket
SCARTs in the wrong holes
the wrong AV inputs selected
If you've checked all this then it's time to start troubleshooting the system.

Let's presume that SKY works OK on to the TV. Your next step is to disconnect the SKY SCART and make a direct connection to the same TV socket with a SCART from the VCR. Play a tape - if you get picture and sound then you know that the cable is OK and the TV input is working fine too. Reconnect everything correctly and try again.
