Surely 'Flying Without Wings' and 'I Believe I Can Fly' hold the record. Also 'Never Had A Dream Come True' and 'Against All Odds' (Westlife and Mariah Carey version, of course).

There are books called "audition pieces" aren't there? These songs are probably in that.

Do you mean pre-performance background songs or the songs actually performed by the contestants on the show?

Louis always gets someone cringe-worthy to sing "I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo"

Makes me laugh everytime

If I hear Enrique Iglesias's (sp?) Hero played over a sob story one more time I will scream!

The show's pretty Westlife biased.

Don't think so.

I must admit I was pleasantly suprised that 'Lady Marmalade' wasn't given to a girl group.

I always think I could (and I bet everyone else does) pick dozens of better songs than the ones they actually sing, ones that really suit the particular contestant as well (perhaps I should be a mentor....), but I've heard time and time again that they are presented with a 'list' and the contestants have to pick out of that, so I don't really think it's as simple as the judges would have us believe that they can actually choose any US or UK No 1 song in X-amount of years.
