Plasma TV VGA Input Confusion for PC

I have a VGA input on the back of my Hitachi Plasma 42" TV, the only thing is is says 'service only' above it, does anyone know if it can be used as a standard VGA input ? If not, what is the best way of connecting my PC with only a VGA output to the plasma TV with x4 scarts, x2 HDMI and x1 S- video, using the existing equipment ? Please help ! Thanks

Sorry, it's a little confusing? - you say you have a VGA input on the back, then say you don't - do you mean you have a D connector socket on the back labelled 'service only'?.

If it's not labelled VGA, then it's not a VGA socket, it'll be some kind of interface for updating the software in the set for engineers.

As long as you have a video card with HDMI or DVI on it, then you can use an HDMI socket on the TV.

Hi, sorry I was a bit confused as to what the socket was, I now know from your reply that it is not a VGA socket, its a 'D socket', that I knew nothing about ! So it looks like I will need to upgrade the graphics card in the PC for one with a TV out, HDMI out etc, unless I can get a VGA to scart/RGB cable, do they exist ?

If the socket on the TV only has two rows of pins then it is a serial port (most likely) but certainly not VGA which has three rows of pins.

Going by other posts on DS the VGA to SCART route may not be your best option. Although both are nominally RGB there is no guarantee they will work together. If your PC has DVI however you may have more joy.

DVI and HDMI are compatible with each other and all that is needed (famous last words there) is a DVI to HDMI converter, either a lead or plug adapter.

Your biggest problem may well be sound. VGA is definately video only. DVI can be video only depending on the graphics card. Some DVI graphics cards can however be connected to a digital audio out from a sound card and feed sound to the DVI socket and onwards to the TV via HDMI.

But if all you want is picture then DVI to HDMI may be the simpler option. Assuming you have DVI already obviously. If you need to upgrade then there may be an advantage to getting a graphics card with HDMI.

Thanks for the info, I have learnt a lot from the replys, I have also learnt that I need to buy a new graphics card for my PC, as mine only has a VGA out !
