Never heard of this type of cable configuration before, a quick search did bring up a few results though, no idea if it will work for the type of application you are wanting it for.
Ebay seems your best bet. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=290264341785 |

It would be easier (and cheaper) to just check if your graphics card has got a s-video output first, before buying any hardware.
The red and white ports are just sound, and can be connected from your soundcard using a 3.5mm to RCA cable: http://www.amazon.co.uk/3-5mm-Phono-Stereo-Audio-Cable/dp/B000Q6LSWM/ -Chris |

Your "red, white, yellow" connectors are Phono (or RCA) connectors and carry sound(red), sound(white) & composite video(yellow) respectively - how the hell does this have ANYTHING to do with USB??? If you want to get video out of a computer (laptop or desktop) then you have to have a video output - either composite video, s-video or even DVI, but you won't get ANY video out of a USB port!! |

I'm curious as to what those cables would be used for, does anyone have any idea? (Obviously not to get video out of a USB port

I thought I'd seen everything after 20+ years in the video world but WTF is that! Why would such a cable even exist? What would you actually get through such a cable? There is no composite video OR audio coming out of a USB port.
Admittedly it is from Ebay so caution should be taken before ordering. It's a work of art all the same.

Well guys, I have some of those cables, and in my car are 2 x 8" LCD screens whith 'USB' sockets that they plug in to, with a pair of slimline PS2's hanging off the other end. The USB is just the form factor of the plug, saved them from making up their own plug. Nothing to do with PCs. No idea what this chap is planning to stick the USB end into of course.

They are confusingly labelled though (maybe deliberately), assuming that they are the same as in your car (we don't know what the wiring is) they should be advertised as something like "AV to mini LCD cables" and USB shouldn't really be mentioned. |

I could go with that. I have not bothered to plug one in to my lappy to see what happens, cos I know that'll be diddly squat. The idea is good as a compact connector for the application I have though, it's a smart idea.

Explain this then!
Any general purpose data transfer connection (e.g. Ethernet) that has enough throughput can be used to pass video but you need electronics to convert this. This particular adaptor is actually a VGA card but the comms is done by USB2 instead of the normal PC bus interfaces so there isn't even a video stream such as MPEG being transferred. |

That is a piece of electronics not a cable. USB at it's simplest is a means of transferring data and USB2 is quite capable (by many times) of transferring compressed video images. An adaptor can takes this transfer and convert it into VGA, there is no direct video signal coming out of the USB port.

Nevertheless you are taking a signal from a USB port and connecting it to a monitor! If as you say there was no Video/MPEG data on the USB port then this could not be done. A video card can only convert Video data into a form suitable for driving a monitor if the video data is present in the first place.
In the case of this module the PC processor writes data into the module and from that the module creates a VGA signal just like a graphics card in the PC would do (it is a graphics card). You personally could get exactly the same information but slower out of a sound card by listening to the sounds it makes and manually entering numbers into a separate unconnected module it just wouldn't be as quick - would you say the sound card and yourself carries a video signal? It's quite obvious what LCDMAN meant when he made his statement about not getting any video out of a USB port, he was referring to getting the component video signals etc directly from the electrical signals on USB using a cable adaptor only. |

can anyone actually confirm that these usb to RCA cables could get a computer movie file complete with audio from a computer into a TV?

I don't need to put them in my USB port to know mine won't work. You cannot write a driver to do this, other electronics have to be involved. As you see, with a hardware device, you can do it, and there are certainly USB to TV devices out there, but a £2.99 cable cannot be made to do it.

The wiring of a USB computer port and the "USB" connector on this lead will be very different. Even though they may physically interconnect they will never electrically interconnect. The signals coming out of USB are digital in nature, ie just streams of ones and zeros. The audio and video connections that the phono plugs connect to are analogue. There is no lead yet made that can do digital to analogue conversion on it's own. There has to be a bunch of electronics to do the job. And finally, a PC USB port carries 5V to power external devices. One wonders exactly where this 5V ends up being connected with that lead. So if you were foolish enough to try and plug it between USB port and TV for instance do not be at all surprised if you damage your PC. |
