Poorly TomTom one

Hi, My TOMTOM one seems to be poorly.

It tries to speak directions to me but it often comes out garbled or a chirp or sometimes nothing at all, it never works properly. The map works fine and all the other features. I didn't( I thought I had) make a back up after having to wipe my HDD so I wondered, is there anything I can do- it seems like part of the file is corrupt - specifically the voice files, I have tried a stand alone voice package with celebrity "voices"...

any suggestions...

First off. Locate the Reset hole on the TomTom and stick a pin in there to hardware reset the thing (doesn't wipe any data or anything - it's just restarts the program) Switching off and back on again sometimes isn't enough to get it to play the game if it goes off in a sulk.

That may or may not cure it so try this if not. If you go to the TomTom website you should be able to download the standard voice files for free. Or they may be on the CD that came with your TomTom (if there was one of course).

Try installing one of those. If a standard TomTom voice doesn't work then the unit may be faulty. Or it may be something other than a voice file that is screwed up.

If you haven't got a back-up then your options are a bit limited. If you have a CD see if it has an image of the TomTom software on it. You could try a selective copy of that, basically copy everything except the map folders from CD to TomTom.

But before doing that make a back up of the TomTom. Do not use TomTom Home for this, it has a tendency to miss files. Use My Computer to do it. but first make sure it is displaying all files (Tools menu - Folder Options - Vierw tab select Show hidden files) Then select every file and folder (Ctrl A is the easy way) and copy it all to a folder on your PC. Then try copying from the CD image back to the TomTom.

The reason for not copying the map folders from the CD is that they are the most expensive bits of sotfware on the TomTom so if you've upgraded them you will have to buy the newer versions all over again!

If you have upgraded the firmware in the TomTom then it will roll it back to the version installed originally. But if you connect it to TomTom Home on your PC it should download the latest version again (which is free).

Ands of course if all else fails you can simply restore the back-up you made
