How Many People Here Buy A Song / Album More Than Once ?

Carrying on from the Calling All Legal Downloaders Thread, I was wondering how many people here buy a track more than once ?.

I got into a debate earlier with a friend who does everything by the book & he was moaning that just because I have bought the CD or bought the track online, it doesn't give the right to put it on my PS3 / MP3 Player & that I should purchase the track for each device that I want to hear it on .

Personally, I will only buy a song once & put it on every device I feel the need to & if I purchase a CD that cannot be ripped, I will then raid the usual suspects so I can have the album on my MP3 player / Computer.

How many other people here agree with my friend & how many people here think that once they have bought the track, they can then put it on as may devices as they wish ?

Your friend is absurd. I completely agree with you. I buy albums mostly on CD though I have started downloading them from the itunes store. I also download single songs from there. All the CD albums I buy are ripped straight on to my computer which I believe is well within my rights.

I buy the CD, it then gets loaded onto my PC and the disc is put away for safe keeping...

If I want to play it whilst traveling I'll either take the CD or copy it onto the laptop. As far as I'm concerned that's personal use and if it's not not strictly legal then I don't really care - either way I wouldn't buy it twice, I would just do without.

Is your friend an employee of the BPI? As far as I'm concerned when I buy music I can put that onto whatever device I choose. Although not strictly legal, the BPI have said that they do not consider it copyright infringement, and if it's good enough for them it's good enough for me. Like Gneiss when I buy a CD I rip it to my PC and then never use it again. I play it on a couple of music clients in the house and also transfer it to my mp3 player.

I do remember a friend bought a Travis album twice - CD for the house and cassette for the car, though that wasn't yesterday! They really liked that album!

For my own use, I'll certainly just buy on CD and copy as required. The only time I've re-bought is a few albums I had on cassette I bought the CDs (cheap) on Amazon.

Yeah, again I agree. If I buy a CD I will rip it to my pc and my ps3. The PS3 has a ripping option anyway so I just pop the cd into my PS3 and it copies all the tracks over. Is sony breaching the law then? Don't think so.

I have never come across a CD I can't rip though. I use WMP11 to rip all my music. WMP11 again has a 'rip' option.

If you look at WMP11 help online, and look under the 'how to rip' section, good old microsoft shows images of a Fleetwood Mac and Joss Stone CD being ripped - again are Microsoft breaching the law? Nah!

I have made a backup copy of a cd thats badly scratched...again though I can prove I bought the original CD.

What a silly friend you have.

By that logic then surely they must buy a CD for each CD System they play their music on?

its illogical, I buy CDs and then rip it into my computer for listening to on the computer, putting on Ipod or making random CDs. I sometimes buy a song twice if its released before the album, like 4 Minutes by Madonna or So What by P!nk and then end up having it twice when I buy the album (or will have it twice when I buy Funhouse) although I must admit I have occassionally found the first single from an album from other sources until I get my hands on the album if the single has a long delay between airplay and download availability.

I often do it with re-releases where something is added (e.g. a DVD or a few new songs), otherwise I don't bother.

I have NEVER heard anything so ridiculous in all my life. Buy it once and listen to it where you want , on any device you want. Your friend is an absolute TW*T for thinking that.

I bought two copies of Keep On. The first one was worn out! Some of tracks kept jumping.

It just has so many advantages...

I used to find when playing CDs on the PC that I couldn't be bothered to constantly change them so ended up with the same CD playing on a loop all day

Sticking them on the PC you can setup playlists for various moods or even shuffle the whole lot for a bit of variety... Also, provided the PC they are saved on is switched on I can play them from any other PC in the house without ending up with discs in every room of the house and never being able to find them!

Total pain for me having to buy the same Manics single three times in ordser to get all the b sides. There should be a law against it. Still, they aren't the only band that do it.
Same with albums when you buy one then awhile later it gets reissued with an extra track. Not fair to the fans who bought it in the first place to give it its initial chart position.

As far as I'm concerned, if I have purchased a track legally either via CD or the internet I will put it on my i pod/pc whatever. I don't see why you should have to buy an MP3 of a song that you already own on CD either. That's nuts.
