Rank the contestants on vocal ability
3YearsfromNow

Hey! Itsbeen a coupla years but I'm back with a new name.
My first post is going to ask. Fundementally this is a singing competition - so putting aside all of your personal preferences - which solo contestants do you think have the strongest vocal ability in order.

I would say:
1. Rachel
2. Laura
3. Alexandra
4. Austin
5. Ruth
6. Diana
7. Daniel
8. Scott
9. Eoghen (dont remember the spelling!)

I dont think Ive heard them sing a song start to finish to make that choice yet, 30 second snippets then tantrums about too fast, lost words, crying ect, dont give me enough to judge them on, I think id have a better idea once the live shows start. You tube ect is ok but under the pressure of live shows is where I think we'll start seeing the real talents.

Based on what has been shown of them, I am going to go by general criteria for 'good' vocals such as tone/quality/overall sound clarity and consistency, 'unique factor',control, agility or power( or both depending on voice type),range, style, and natural ability/potential .

1Alexandra
2Laura/Diana(Joelle)
3Austin/some members of JLS

4Ruth/Rachel/a couple of the members of the girl bands(Suzie/Hanna)

5(Amy) Daniel/Eoghan

Thats as far as I can really go with this for now

I'm not talking about unique factor or anything like that which is why i put Diana quite low. I'm talking range, tone, power.

I agree with tenchgirl that I haven't heard enough of them yet - but I would put Rachel at the top. Hannah would've been up there too if she'd gotten through.

1. Diana
2. Laura
3. Rachel
4. Daniel
5. Ruth
7. Scott
7. Eoghan

The above don't shout.

These two below do shout and when you shout your vocal ability is just shouting. Lets see Alexandera sing a song without taking a full breath or even Austin for that matter. Sad fact is, sending these two to the final has made them think shouting is appropriate.

But what can you say - there is an inherent impregnated belief that shouting equals singing quality which people get from the judges saying "like Mariah" or "like Whitney" when these two were so completely force fed to us...

8. Alexandera
9. Austin

i think Scott and Eoghan are almost always note perfect.

I think Alex is the only real powerhouse singer, though i find her dull to listen to.

I'd agree with this, and am looking forward to Saturday to hear them properly.

I disagree with the "shouting" comment.

It's not shouting, it's vocal power.

Some, like young Eoghan, barely get above a whisper, whereas the better singers can belt it out with the best.

One of the girls (Laura White) is just incredible, and I - like Cheryl and Kimberly - wondered how she'd managed to exist up until now without someone snapping her up.

Alexandra is the only with real vocal ability.

I agree and disagree with your first commet.

Theres a big difference between shouting and having vocal power i.e whitney and mariah sing with 'power', mariah and xtina do powerful runs etc- and you need the power behind your vocals to be able to do that. Then theres just shouting coz you dont have the power behind your voice to sing loud etc- i.e Beverly (xf 4) and Jenifer Hudson to an extent, its not tuneful- its just sounds shouty.

Alexandra has excellent vocal capabilities. Laura is totally different class, but Diana is this year's "same difference". Rachel is good, but not sure about the delivery of vocal as a song / finished product.

My top picks are: -

Alexandra
Laura
Rachel
Austin
Diana

I was primarily going by that, but will try to narrow it down.

1 Alexandra-without a doubt the most gifted in range and power, possibly in tone, too, but would have to hear how she sounds when not belting.

2 Some of JLS-have range, tone, and power, and will likely show it more during solos in their performances

3-(Joelle) (Hanna) Diana . She lacks power, but her tone is distinctive and actually quite good(within her style of music). Her range is good, too.She doesnt belt, so it is more subtle, but noteable.

4Laura-has tone, but faulty in places. Has the range and some power. Id like to hear her back off forcing her voice a little. Her voice is very good overall, though.

5Austin-good tone/range/reasonable ability to progect/power(Susie)

6 Rachel-ability to project, reasonable power but only in limmited part of her average range. Good tone in places, but she has a very limited, one-dimensional tone, wich will show if she attempts to step out of her ability zone again as she did attempting 'beautiful'.

7Ruth not much range, but more power than weve heard, probably, and a gorgeous if inconsistent tone. She will probably improve , and the inconsistencies dont seem to dominate her tone. I dont think we have heard the best of her yet.

9Daniel he does not have a distinctive tone or sound, but his range/tone/power are all good.

9 Eoghaan and some members of the girl bands. Eoghan doesnt have power, but his tone is very good . He has great instincts as far as how to use his voice.
