granted but i think it deserves its own thread.

how many iphone threads do we have?????

Oh and just got my hands on one for the first time, really nice device, from what i've seen out of the box this is a much better device overall than the iphone.

has two rather annoying failings though

no big onboard memory and no wifi

Every Blackberry is better than the iPhone. Remember people don't love the iPhone for what it does but the way it does it. It's a frilly dress on a pig.

I am not too concerned that the store doesn't have much onboard memory, it does take a micro-sd card doesn't it? Leaving wi-fi out is a tad strange though.

What a shame it's a Voda exclusive.

The only thing that let's this phone down is the no WiFi - I don't understand RIMs thinking there.

Ouch I just read this:

Pricing

This isn't a phone for the commitment-phobes. It's exclusively available on Vodafone, forever, and they will tie you into a 24-month contract. Ouch. But it will come for free at a relatively reasonable £35 per month tariff. Launch date is as yet unconfirmed but "well in time for Christmas" we're told.

I fear this might hurt the popularity of the phone. Howay Vodafone, the phone isn't THAT good.

Are you from Tyneside? Don't see that word often used round ere.....

I have to admit the Storm looks beautiful but am waiting to see what the offers are when it is launched, am hoping to obtain it on a 12 month contract, wouldn't be bothered by the particular expense as long as I got the phone. Theres no way I would even consider committing to a 24 month contract when I know fine well RIM will be releasing a major upgrade to the handset within 12 months as is the case with all the other models they do.

i'd plum a guess at not a chance, unless you snap up a PAYG one and use it on a 12month contract.

Gawd knows what a PAYG price will be

The BB Storm looks amazing!
Well i've had a number of goes on it now today and i love it, it has all the traditional blackberry appeal to the business user while takign a huge leap into the consumer market.

a real device for all users.

Ta

Can anyone confirm that the iPhone does not allow email/sms entry in landscape, if thats right then BB fans will love that the Storm does allow landscape messaging with full qwerty.

iPhone doesn't do SMS in landscape mode, only internet.

Doesn't need it though. No matter how back you are, and how much you mess up the iPhones unrivaled software correction technology always manages to get it perfect. I type messages without even looking at what i've wrote now such is the confidence I have.

Just had a look at some of the specs.

- Accelerometer which automatically rotates the screen when the device is tilted. (In all honesty how many BlackBerry lovers called this a gimmick?)

-65k colour screen. 65 thousand. . . .I mean for such a high-end device I'm honestly speechless.

- Ambient light sensor. (wonder where they got that from?)

Does anyone know if the devices screen turns off when you put it close to your ear? . . .I mean are they paying Apple for the license of these technologies?

All in all - RIM's "First BlackBerry Touchscreen!!" is just like every other high-end touch screen phone out there. . .a pale imitation of innovation.

funny, every blackberry I have owned has had an ambient light sensor. And both the pearl and the curve came out before the iPhone. And as for the screen, how does the iPhone compare to the Bold?

i'd suggest that a clickable touchscreen is not like all the other's and quite innovative.

oh and i'm anything but a blackberry lover, this will be my first one.

what i do find odd is that the phone has a multi-point touch screen but they've failed to really utilaise it, i'd expect plently of 3rd party apps that will.

Been reading an Engadget hands on today. Seems like they just love the touchscreen, especially the keyboard and text input. The clickable screen is apparently great.

Only downside they really point out is the lack of hardware graphics acceleration. This meant browsing was 'choppy' and there were no real animations to the interface. Oh and obviously no wifi which is pretty daft really.

You've got to laugh at that though

tbh the lack of wifi is no surprise.

and the do like it don't they

"But the true test of any touch-based phone is typing, and we won't hold any punches here: we're in love. In fact, we like it enough to pit it against regular button-based keyboards, since it easily leaves traditional touchscreen typing (even that hokey haptics stuff, Nokia, LG) in the dust. In landscape mode, the QWERTY keyboard is simply gargantuan, which means the keys are hard to miss. Tap a key and it glows, letting you know you're on the right one, click the "key" (the entire screen, really, but it feels like you're just clicking that one key) and you type the letter. We're guessing we could type out a few words without looking in a pinch, and for people just starting out on a mini-QWERTY keyboard, they're going to have a much easier time finding the letters than on those relatively teensy QWERTY keyboards on existing HTC, Palm and RIM phones. We're even bigger fans of typing in SureType mode (two letters per virtual key), with the phone in portrait. The buttons are the largest of any SureType keyboard out there, you can type with one hand, and the touchability of the screen means it's easy to select the right word when there are multiple options. Both options blow away the touchscreen alternatives thanks to the screen click, though SureType is an acquired taste."

Vodafone will clearly want people using their network and not a wifi service

Why?

erm 16 million colors for iPhone, both bold and storm have 65 thousand.

It's good to have companies battle with each other - leads to even more innovation.

It says "The BlackBerry Storm will be available from next month through Vodafone stores as well as independent outlets and online. Full pricing details will be available in the coming weeks". Here, on the Vodafone website.
