The strange case that is Brian/ Don't they look like....

This is a two topic thread because one part wouldn't last long by its self.

First, I find Brian the most confused/ confusing character in the house. Sometimes I think he's being bullied because all the practical jokes revolve around him, then I think he invites this by behaving like an annoying child who wants attention even if its negative.

Are the other guys bullying him? Or does he just demand to be the centre of attention?

He behaves very camply which I think is the reason Josh makes him so nervous. With Josh there its exposed as being very false. Is this campness a way of being gay but non threatening to the straight guys and appealing to the women? Again Josh suggests that this might not be true.

Having projected an image of the screaming queen he reveals that he's only slept with two people and only came out 3 days before he entered the house. How could his friends and family not have known? Can this be true?

Answers on a postcard please.

Second, do any of the characters remind you anyone famous? I'm fairly convinced that Elizabeth IS Emma Thompson.
Helen is Bonnie Tylers younger sister, they have exactly the same nose and she's even kept the eighties hairdo.
Bubble looks a lot like George Dawes but he looks a lot more as if this is the first time he's worn clean clothes for a while and that he can be usually seen outside railway stations accompanied by a dog on a piece of string. I mean that in a good way of course.

I've already written about campness in the "BB Editing!" thread. To summarise, yes campness has developed as a way to be openly homosexual while being non-threatening, but it also comes naturally (i.e. stems from unconscious habit rather than being consciously forced) for many people. As homosexuality becomes more acceptable within society, and as more alternative gay images become visible in the media, habitual campness becomes less common among gay men. Josh, for instance, exemplifies a more contemporary gay stereotype, that of the "gym queen" (going on "muscle mary"), one of the images beloved of the gay media and encouraged because of its attractiveness to advertisers. Neither Brian nor Josh should be taken as typical of homosexual males, most of whom are no different to any other blokes in appearance, thought or behaviour aside from the types of people they fancy[*]. Even such attributes as exceptional fastidiousness and fashion sense are largely mythological (as anyone who's met me or seen my flat can testify), and the concept of a unified "gay community" is as false as that of a single "black community", "disabled community" or "red-haired community".

No one in the house particularly reminds me of anyone famous. I had a giggle in the early days of the programme though when someone stated that nobody would believe Bubble was gay. Bubble actually reminds me of my last boyfriend (in behaviour more than appearance).

Oh, and to answer your other questions, I don't think it's a matter of either/or. I feel that Brian was indeed picked on by the other men in the first couple of weeks but that he also immaturely begs for attention. It's also very common for parents (and others who've know someone from a young age) to assume heterosexuality, even when a person is extremely camp. It often takes a fresh pair of eyes to notice such things.

[*] Note that, for this very reason, homosexual men are as likely as anyone else to believe common misconceptions and mythology about sexuality (especially if their social circles are small or primarily consist of the commercial "gay scene").

Beutifully put H .

Bonnie Tyler was a power ballad singer ("I need a hero" was her biggest hit) and often turns up on those "I love 198x" shows. You know, she looks just like Helen.

George Dawes ( might have misspelt his surname) was the bloke who played the drums on Vic and Bobs "Shooting Stars".

I sense that this thread may not have a long life....

I missed Nuttytarts thread! I see what you mean.

Josh looks a bit like Craig if he had been stretched out a lot or if josh had had a huge weight on his head and was squashed. Are you watching BB on widescreen this year? Craig was the one that won wasn't he? How fast they fade...

Narinda reminds me of someone who was on Eastenders but I can't remember who.

You're probably thinking of "Gita" and "sanjay" off eastenders. (I see your point!!)

Thanks, Joe. I think I could have put some things a little better (and elaborated upon how campness reassures potentially homophobic males by suggesting that homosexual men are an entirely different species, thus bolstering the illusion that they themselves are immutably 100% heterosexual) but I've probably been OT enough for now.

Other people should surely be able to continue the lookalike aspects of this thread, and possibly even the other aspects if I go back and add "in my opinion" to every statement.

Someone wrote into BBLB to say that Narinda looked like Henrik Larson of Celtic. Cruel but you can see where they were coming from.

Thanks it's Gita she reminds me (definatly not Sanja, that would be cruel)

I've lost all sympathy for Brian, now I just find him self-centred, two faced and frankly a bit creepy.

I like Brian!!!! He's funny and gets on well with everyone else in the house - so whats not to like?? He allways gets picked on by Josh + Bubble!!! If you ask me Brian is top quality entertainment!!!!!

Well we certainly agree that he should stay, although I must say he's a lot duller since Naz left and some of his campness seems to have transfered to Josh.

Does anyone else think he and Paul could be twins? The only way to tell them apart is that one has absolutly no charisma.

hey joenormal.... it was Elizabeth who the viewer said looked like Henrick Larsson, not Narinder. Narinder doesnt look anthing like him!

What's not to like about Brian? I doubt that there's enough room in this edit box for the list! (I've just noticed his statement that he thought Helen was "immature and too sensitive[*]"!)

As for Josh, I don't think that his campness has increased at all. Perhaps people are just starting to notice it more.

H.
[*] "Sensitive", where the word applies to Brian, being in respect to his own feelings. He appears to be almost entirely insensitive to the feelings of others except in regard to himself.

I often wonder what it is about camp men that many straight men find unsettling.

As far as I can see Josh may not be as camp as Brian but he strikes me as more effeminate. Brian may be a bit OTT but I think you'd know where you were with him compared to just about anyone else in the palce.

IME, straight men generally find camp or effeminate homosexual males less unsettling than non-camp ones, for reasons that I've gone into in other threads.

You might perceive Josh as more feminine than Brian because he's more softly spoken (i.e. rarely if ever screams or shouts), is relatively unaffected in his behaviour and occasionally gives the impression of actually caring about other people.

Yes, I'd know where I was with Brian: in his eyes, beneath him!
