we were talking about cheese on toast in work recently and someone mentioned 'Aromat' (not sure thats how its spelt) but I remembered it from years ago, when it seemed everyone was sprinkling this on there above hot cheesy cold weather comfort food!

Had a look at it yesterday in supermarket but it had MSG as 2nd ingredient so put it back on shelf. Nice tasty memory but will settle now for a shake of Lee & Perrins

A smear of marmite makes all the difference.

I was watching a program and they said that by its self MSG was not the major health problem that it's made out to be. It's just that in the west we add a heap load of salt to it as well because we are addicted to s&p.

Agree with the worcestershire sauce. You need a dash of that.

Don't like it.

I like toast and I like cheese, but I don't like cheese on toast.

I can quite happily make toast, spread it and then put cheese in-between like a sandwich.

I get annoyed with that advert on TV for cheese on toast. Is it for Cathedral cheddar ? There is no way you can get it looking like that, unless you have 1/2 a pack of cheese in the bottom of the grill pan where its melted off the sides and a blow torch.

Im another that likes it though. I adore cheese on toast with some brown sauce on the side to dip into it.

Toast one side of bread.

Turn over, spread Marmite.

Top with good strong cheddar, but not Tesco Canadian cheddar, as it slides off the bread, into the grill pan!

Pop under grill to soften slightly.

Remove, add a splash of Worcester sauce, a spread of Nando's hot peri-peri sauce (or Tabasco), a good grind of black pepper.

Back under the grill to melt.

Serve.

I could eat grilled cheese on toast every night of the week. I like it with tomatoes and lots of salt and pepper.

I do love cheese on toast but must have had it so much over the years I kind of 'went off' of it.

I have a variation now - I grill some wholemeal pitta's, stick some Red Leicester in whilst still piping hot (so cheese melts) and then add a little tomato, cucumber and/or onion. Delish....... and feels slightly healthier than classic cheese on toast - although I am sure its not

It's got cucumber in it, how can it not be healthy?

A really, really hot grill ensures the cheese bubbles.
You need to get the cheese grated or sliced first though because the bread will be flashed brown in no time.

I like it with a little bit of butter put on top and spread in, when it's nearly melted and lots of black pepper. It's also good with tomatoes and M&S do a cheese which has balsamic onions in it , which is very nice toasted. We always used to use cheddar until someone on here said Red Leicester was good (I'd always thought that was a pointless cheese) on toast and it really was. Still prefer a good cheddar but it's nice for a change.

Welsh rarebit on flat mushrooms - lovely!
