I've just made an impulse purchase of the Sharp LC46X20E (46 LCD" & 1080p), and will be using Sky+, until Sky set up the HD.

Slightly concerned as my in-laws bought a 50" plasma Samsung PS50A457P1D about a year ago and get a really grainy picture via standard sky box.

I wondered if there is a change I'll get the same poor picture quality. Does anyone know?

I'm not sure what you mean by "grainy picture" as that doesn't describe to me the picture quality problems of SD on a large screen. Both those TVs are decent enough.

A lot depends on how far you sit from the screen as the further away you sit the smaller the screen will seem and the better the PQ. Also bear in mind that when you get HD you will still watch a lot of SD.

RGB in sky set up will help

in a RGB scart socket on the telly

It's sort of like the picture here, but not quite as bad: http://www.plasticbag.org/images/extra/grainy_three.jpg

Doesn't matter whether you're up close or further away - Looks like the picture you would get from an old crt with a bad aerial signal. I don't know why this happens but can't act the in-laws in case they're offended or don't see it as much.

Sounds like they're watching via an analogue RF connection on channel 6 rather than via scart of any kind. And it's not tuned in properly either.

Thanks, everyone for your help and advice - Sounds as if it's going to be ok anyway. If not, It'll be going straight back to Dixons

yes digital reception should clear a lot of that up

are they watching DTV ?

or a cheap RF setup/ faulty lead.............. or aerial.......................... which wont be the fault of Dixons

niall, I think that the clue was in the OP's original post

They watch normal Sky via standard box and gold plated scart. TBH, it doesn't seem to bother them, I was just worried in case mine does this too

Well they wasted their money buying a gold plated SCART lead - but if it's grainy they probably aren't watching it correctly. It needs to be watched via RGB, and it sounds like they are watching via composite, or even RF.

Based upon your picture (I know you said it's not actually as bad) that does look like analogue noise. Are you sure that although they have a gold plated SCART cable that they aren't actually watching via an RF cable by mistake or in fact they are even watching a terrestrial analogue signal? (It's actually surprisingly common).

My father in law had Freeview bought for him last christmas, found out it needed an aerial upgrade, (£150 ish)
When I went round in summer, I noticed quite a bad picture, On examination I noticed he was still watching via analogue, So I changed it over to AV1...Voila! digital pictures.
now, after 6 months, hes made up with his interference free programmes.

As suggested by others, you'd be amazed how many people are watching via Composite or even RF.
