Panasonic DMR-ES20D, DMR-EH60D Software Update Alert
This scheduled software download timing has finally hardened up.
It will be broadcast from 10 am on 13/10/08 until 9 am on 16/10/08. It is strongly recommended that owners of these machines do not miss this update. It is believed to address the 'Split NIT' problem. The current software version is V1.13. The new software is V1.14 Not having it will lead to tuning problems the next time you rescan, and hopefully provide a cure for those who already have and now cannot get programme locations into the correct place. Owners need do nothing to get the download [provided they have not altered the default auto-download settings] other than ensure the machine is powered, has an aerial connected and will be in the standby mode for at least several hours during the several days of the download broadcast period. Not Auto-updating?
By Tuesday morning my own machine had still not done the update, despite being set for auto-update, so I forced an update which then completed without incident.
Reason unknown. But the point is, users should check to ensure their machines have updated whilst there is still time to do so. |

Mine did not autoupdate either, despite being set to do so.
Did manually and OK. Rescanned channels now without worry. |

Anyone know how long it takes for these OAD to be repeated. I've been away this week and missed it as my recorder was not set to auto DL in standby.

It is still worth keeping an eye on things, because for reasons unknown, some machines do not seem to always auto-update. Mine didn't... despite being set for auto-update. I waited two days into the download period and it still had not updated so I forced it manually. |

I had auto update off as I didn't have an aerial feed to the machine for quite a long time, and it kept freezing/locking up totally, requiring the power to be cycled to get it back working again. Luckily, mine does still tune in, but puts the BBC channels on the 800 numbers. |

1.14 = disaster?
Well my ES20D had been working just fine, no recent rescans so it was just doing it's stuff, I didn't know there was any potential "split NIT" problem until just recently. The other day when I turned it on, it inforrmed me it had installed a software update, which made me curious so I read up on here. I confirmed it was this new NIT-fixing 1.14 I now had on the box, and thought I was very lucky to have had the whole thing sorted out before i'd even noticed.
So tonight, like an idiot, I decided it was time to do that long overdue rescan - an "auto-setup restart". It duly took an age to go through the frequencies, pausing at all those I know to be multiplexes, before going on to do the analogue scan. It then presented me with my ten analogue channels (ie, two versions of the standard five) with no digital services whatsoever. None. I've tried rescans, restores to "factory settings", adding new DVB services, all for nothing. The Freeview channels are all fine on my other tuners - coming from Rowridge - but as far as the Panny goes, they don't exist. Great update. |

I've heard of this problem occurring in several different models now and as far as I can gather it arises from failing electrolytics in the one or more of the power lines. I cannot be more precise than that at this time. |

Hmm. That sounds depressing. I've been through capacitor problems on our Digifusion PVR, but happily with those the culprits were identified by others, and quite easy to replace; I sincerely hope the same can happen here.
As it happens, when I rescanned again this morning, everything was fine - I got all our DVB channels back and all is well, for now anyway. But I know these failing caps can be borderline sometimes and the effects are often intermittent, so I can quite believe there may still be a problem lurking there. I seem to be the only one complaining about this software anyway, so it's most likely not that. I suppose I should just be happy it's working fine right now... shouldn't I? |

Would be very interested to hear about the cap... tuning seems fine at the moment (I haven't run the risk of rescanning mind) but I had a dissapointment last week when it recorded three episodes of Dead Set, and then failed to record the final two with no explanation...
![]() I had thought this was a good quality bit of kit, but it's a shame to find it failing after just a couple of years of quite light use (we have a separate PVR for most of the day to day stuff). |

No Freeview
For the first time ever my Trusty Panny DMRES20 has let me down.....due to recent changes I did a re-scan at the weekend resulting in 5 analogue channels and zero Freeview !
My other digiboxes and integrated TV's (all Panny) are OK. Have done a factory defaults reset Any ideas please |

Since v1.14 this is what happens! The work around is to switch the machine off at the mains for 10 minutes or so, then re-power, then attempt a complete rescan. It only works once! If you need to do a further rescan then you will need to repeat this power off process. Best of luck bigmin |

Hey Bigmin....a thousand thank you's for that advice - it worked a treat and so does my recorder now !
![]() ![]() ![]() Having received zero response from Panasonic "technical" / customer "support" [ha ha], I rang them today and their diagnosis was that the tuner had died and would probably need replacing or at the very least the machine would need a software upgrade (it is at 1.14 as you rightly surmised).Cheeky ba**ards in Hughes repair shop wanted a minimum £35 just to look at it (and presumably just do a 3 pin reset) so your advice saved me not only the expense but also I won't have some hairy arse know nothing poking around inside it ! So THANK YOU once again for the advice and speedy reply Dave F |

So pleased it worked. Just one more piece of info: if you need to do it again, I think you will need first to go through the routine of attempting a rescan BEFORE you turn the power off, it will then fail, then proceed as previously. I think this is something to do with clearing the tuning memory. Regards bigmin |

Unfortunately it is, by Panasonic standards, quite an old machine now. I do not have any special access to Panasonic people. I suspect that Gavtech is much more likely to be able to extract a sensible response from them. Over to you Gavtech! bigmin |
