That's how we got our dog back when he ran off. We postered almost every lamp-post, every shop, every dog-poop bin, every entrance to public foot paths and put a leaflet in every door in our street and beyond.
Next day we got sightings so knew he was in the woods & fields behind our house. Because we had the location, we could go a 'scent' the area - we took our urine and the wetted contents of our hoover and poured it in the area. We left worn t-shirts and socks. We walked our other dogs there at dawn and dusk (and several times throughout the day) and even cooked sardines and sausages on a barbique in the area.
I think the above kept him in the area until on the 5th day when a lovely lady walking her dog found him. She is a vet nurse so got her father to call us while she took Hansel to her work for a check up.
If you haven't already contacted
doglost then please do. Jayne is lovely and they have so much good advice about scenting and the best time to look (dusk and dawn) and how to approach your dog if you do spot him - after a couple of days he might not come when you call him. They can advise all the places to call including (sadly) the Highways Agency and Railtrack. They also have volunteer helpers all over the country who will help if they can - postering, looking etc.
At the very least it will give you support and hope - there are many happy stories of found dogs on there too.
