iPod Touch questions

How do you connect to the internet on it? And what is Wi-Fi? I would like to know because I'm considering asking for one for Xmas.

You connect to the internet via Wi-Fi, which the touch has an inbuilt antennae for. Wi-Fi is the way a router can send information (from the internet or connected devices) wirelessly.
I have a new iPod touch 32GB and love it, it's great for checking emails and quickly looking up things rather than having to wait to boot up the PC.

You connect the Touch to the internet using Wi-fi. Wi-fi is a method of connecting to a computer network (and out onto the internet) using radio waves. To do this at home you need a wireless modem router which plugs into a broadband connection.

Wi fi stands for wireless local area network. it's wireless connection at any place.

I forgot about this thread. Does the wi-fi work in any part of the world? Does it matter where you live?

Wi-Fi can be used if:

You are in a wi-fi hotspot (wi-fi is not a universally available thing .... it's not something you can just use anywhere. Someone, somewhere needs to be running the wireless network.)
It's a public - ie. un-protected - wi-fi hotspot
It's a protected wi-fi hotspot that you know the password for
Typically, a router is used in people homes. If you think of the wi-fi broadcast as being a "bubble" around the router (albeit, an invisible, wireless bubble). If you are within that bubble, you can access the wireless network.

Leave the "bubble" though, and you lose the signal.

Public wi-fi hotspots may be bigger, but they may only offer slow connection speeds. You should alse be careful what you acces if using a public/un-protected wireless connection. I wouldn't be using it do any online banking or anything like that!

Unfortunately, I'm sorry to say you might have problems using the Wi-Fi functionality on the New (2nd Gen) iPod Touch.

I've bought the 32GB one and it appears there is a bug in the iPhone and iPod Touch 2G firmware which affects most (but not all) routers which use WPA2 and possibly WPA encryption, however, they work fine with WEP encryption but WEP is not very secure.

It appears to be a big problem and one can only hope that Apple are working on it.

I don't think I'm getting one now. My mum said that my dad might buy me a new computer for Xmas. Maybe I'll buy the Touch next year myself.

Chances are it's probably still on the default password by the sound of it.

Try here:

http://artofhacking.com/etc/passwd-belkin.htm

... find your model number and try logging in as it suggests.

If you can't get in with the default password, do a reset on the router and it'll put it back to factory defaults and the address/username/password on the above link should get you into the admin page for it.

The password your iPod touch is looking for is your WPA/WEP passkey on the router settings by the way, not the same password you use to log into the router itself. (Well, unless you've set them the same I suppose)

I bought my iPod touch for poser value (looks great sitting in the lounge on the Bose sounddock portable), but more recently have been using it in bed as a tv via BBC iPlayer Beta since Mrs Lawrenma2 won't let me have a tv in the bedroom, and it is perfect for this via Wi-Fi, with realyl high quality pictures and doesn't bother her if you put the screen on full dim and actually used the small acrylic stand it comes with!

My son's after one for christmas but I am not sure, I assume it will be as fragile as his IPOD which packed up with the broken screen problem.

So which model and where are the best deals, anything I should avoid ?

Also what is the difference between the iPod Touch and the NEW - iPod Touch. ?

The 2nd gen ipod touch has a small built in speaker and a volume button on the side. Battery life is meant to be better too.

I've just bitten the bullet and bought a 2nd Gen 16GB iPod Touch (couldn't quite afford the 32GB one) so I'm now eagerly awaiting a UPS delivery man walking up to the front door!

I'm not looking forward quite so eagerly to doing battle with iTunes, but hey ho...no choice with an iPod....or is there? Does anyone know of a more user-friendly app that'll let me, for example, drag and drop my mp3s onto the iPod?

Cheers.

How does the WIFI range compare with a normal laptop in terms of maximum distance from the router ?

I was wondering the same because Argos have the 1st gen 16gb on sale at £148 http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...ext%3EIPOD.htm

which is cheaper than the 2nd gen 8gb which is around £169

Edit: just found this, 2nd gen Vs 1st gen review buy some kid http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xm6QmgRqnQI

UPS man delivered it on Friday but I've been too busy over the weekend to do anything with it!

I'll give it a go this evening.

Nope, didn't appear in 'My Computer' at all.

I've installed the dreaded iTunes, and synced my iPod, transferred 7.6Gb of music on to it - glad I scraped up the extra for the 16Gb version, there's a load more I want to put on so the 8Gb one wouldn't have been able to cope!
