These stats are interesting. Looking at the averages for all the dances on Saturday:
a) Those with ballroom seem to have a slightly easier job than those with Latin
b) Christine and Matt look to have the easiest job with the American Smooth, followed by John and Kristina with the foxtrot
c) The waltz is much lower down than I would have thought but those scores are slightly skewed by the fact that half the men dance it in week one. Likewise with the cha cha

I wonder what the averages would be for all dances if you took week one (and two from the series where they split the couples) out of the equation. Might have to look into it... (I have no life either)

Nice summary. Except, Samba is danced by Andrew and Ola.

I can see most of them better the average on Saturday except John, Andrew and - surprise! - Cherie.

Among the table-toppers the waltz is the most potent scoring vehicle of all. Last year Alesha's waltz beat Alesha's Paso, Gethin's waltz beat Gethin's Paso, Matt D's waltz beat Matt D's Paso. I believe the 3 waltzes scored respectively 38, 39, 40, beating all 3 Paso's.

So when Camilla piloted Gethin into a Paso against Matt D's waltz in the do-or-die semi-final Gethin was doomed. Conversely Gethin waltzing against Matt D Paso'ing would have sailed into the Final, sigh.

Pro dancers in their role as army commanders please pay as much attention to this tactical point as to the fleckerl or reverse turn.

Foxtrot is a very difficult dance, and, although it can be danced well, it's difficult to perfect, just like Rhumba of the latin dances!

Jive (to be danced by Rachel and Vincent)

Highest Score (Female)

Jill Halfpenny 40 2-F
Louisa Lytton 36 4-3
Alesha Dixon 36 5-3
Kelly Brook 36 5-7

Alesha Dixon 35 5-F
It's really interesting that Jill's first jive is only placed 5th - yet even in Week 3, it was probably better than all of the ones above it.

I have always thought that the timing of the various dances was crucial. For example, Austin may be looking good right now but he still has most of the potential pitfalls to come. Tom, on the other hand, assuming he survives Saturday's paso, will have got a couple of major hurdles (Paso and Cha Cha) out of the way. That said, they both still have the rumba to do.

I often wonder if the dances are chosen by the producers or the professionals. If it is the former then the pros would have no say in what they do each week.

I suppose part of the problem for the Rumba is that it's a difficult dance for a man, and until series four the women did it in week two, too early for a ten. Colin should have had tens for his though I thought.

I have thought about a statistic of my own from this current series. Apart from week 2 and 4 when only the females celebs danced, every dance off has ended in a male eviction. Only two females to leave have been Gillian and Jessie.

Am I right ??? seems quite amazing but I think I am.

Jodie and Ian with their romantic waltz tonight will undoubtedly be a big hit with the public and score mid thirties? However the waltz is a weaponn of ultimate survival, which once fired cannot be used again until the Final.

In SCD4, early in round 7 even the limited dancer Matt Dawson with Lilia scored his career-high 37 with the waltz (one TEN?), against Mark Ramps and Karen who chose that night to get their low-scoring rumba (27) out of the way when safe from eviction. In the semi-final when Matt desperately needed a big gun against Emma he no longer had one. He was beaten into last but was rescued by phone voters.

In SCD5 Gethin and Camilla wasted their 39 waltz the night Kenny was evicted. Had they saved the waltz for the semi-final, scoring (as they did before) 39 against Matt D's 40, Gethin would have beaten both Matt D and Alesha on two-dance scores. With Gethin then enjoying a surge of popular support the dance-off would have involved Matt D and Alesha, who would have been toast against a reprise of the 4-tens waltz.

History thus took a turning following one tactical decision by one commander.

But do the pro dancers actually choose when to do the dance? Or is it the producers?

Can you settle something for me - in my Strictly Annual for this year the highest rhumba score is listed for being for Zoe Ball (38) if anyone's interested - however I do know that this includes Christmas special score as Darren Gough is joint highest for the QS with Colin Jackson (both 40) which he must have achieved at Christmas. I assume that QM you didn't include Crimbo special scores as they tend to be higher than main competition scores - i.e the judges relax a bit more. So did Zoe Ball do a 38 point rhumba for a christmas special or have the good folks doing the Strictly Annual got it wrong.

BTW - if anyone's interested the stats (given for dances done in all of first four seasons only - five hadn't started when it was compiled) are:

Cha Cha Cha:

Best: Jill Halfpenny and Louisa Lytton (both 36)
Worst: Quentin Wilson (8)

Jive:

Best: Jill Halfpenny (40)
Worst: Fiona Phillips (16)

Rumba:

Best: Zoe Ball (38)
Worst: Fiona Phillips (11)

Paso Double:

Best: Jill Halfpenny and Emma Bunton (37)
Worst: Dennis Taylor and Chris Parker (15)

Samba:

Best: Zoe Ball (38)
Worst: Chris Parker (15)

Waltz:

Best: Matt Dawson (38)
Worst: Fiona Phillips (11)

Quickstep:

Best: Colin Jackson and Darren Gough (40)
Worst: Diarmuid Gavin (12)

Foxtrot:

Best: Zoe Ball (38)
Worst: Fiona Phillips (20)

Tango:

Best: Zoe Ball (38)
Worst: Diarmuid Gavin (12)

Zoe did indeed get 38 for a Christmas Special rumba. I think it's a bit dubious including the Christmas Special marks in any statistical analysis (full marks to QM for not including them!). Everyone knows that they're not a real reflection of the dance. Even Craig gets his 10 paddle out on a regular basis (ooer Missus). I really don't think Darren Gough's Christmas quickstep or even Colin's own was as good as the one Colin and Erin did in the series 3 final.

Yep, as Tabitha says, none of my stats include specials (be they Christmas or Sports Relief).

Based on nothing (because I haven't seen any of his training), but I don't see Austin beating the high scores for this.
