Makes a change from the papers saying 'So-and-so wants to be in EE/Corrie/Emmerdale'

I thought it was so funny when he did Who Do you Think You Are and he was so disappointed that instead of the exciting Irish ancestors he expected, it turned out his family came from Croydon. He seemed quite pretentious and very grumpy.

I know him as the guy in the first Alien film, who had the alien burst out of his chest.

He's a big actor, who comes accross as a bit of a moody so-and-so in interviews and quite clearly thinks a lot of himself.

He's an excellent actor, but yes a bit pompous as many actors are. He was brilliant in the Alan Clark Diaries.

He's probably heard how much hard work it is.

It's quite sad if he is best known for the dreadful Alien which in my opinion is far naffer than any soap. He's done one or two other things...

Yeah, poor John got all precious upon discovering there were no leprechauns at the bottom of his garden. Not as bad as Jerry Irons, though. He seemed so gutted at discovering no Irish heritage that I almost felt like calling the Samaritans on his behalf. Almost, but not quite.

I see absolutely no reason why this made the news....

He is not associated with soaps, so why on earth does he feel he needs to tell us he doesn't want to be in one??

Why does somebody have to be a snob just because they don't want to be in a soap opera?

He IS a brilliant actor.

If he IS a snob then he's a person who has a lot to be snobbish about!

Well said. He is probably one of the best actors of this era and if he does'nt want to be in a soap so what.

He was in Midnight Express, pretty good in that. I like John Hurt and his humanitarian attitude.

Perhaps it's just me but it read as if he feels himself above that.

So what? Who cares? I like John Hurt as an actor, but why does it matter if he doesn't want to be in a soap?

There's nothing in that article that suggests he is dissing soaps, he just doesn't want to appear in one. So why is he therefore a snob?

I didn't take it that way. Films and plays are a different world from soaps. I think it's interesting that John Hurt has brought up the difference and stated that he won't go near soaps. I certainly don't think it's a non - story.

I'm asking myself the same question. I don't want to work at Lidl or in Claire's Accessories, or be a nurse - does that make me a snob or someone who just doesn't want to do those jobs? I can't see any problem with what he's said. It's not as if he's criticising the shows themselves. I bet there are other types of shows he wouldn't want to appear in such as musicals or panto, just there are many jobs lots of us have no plans to do. He knows his strengths/limitations, & sees no reason at his time of life to experience something just for the sake of, just because someone puts the idea to him. Good for him. He'll live without appearing in soaps, just as I'll cope with not having experienced filleting fish at the local fishmonger. If asked, I bet Take That would say they have no plans to do karaoke at my local pub.

I do think he's a great actor: he played Timothy Evans in 10 Rillington Place, Caligula in I Claudius, the Elephant Man (sorry can't remember his name), Quentin Crisp in the Naked Civil servant, Alan Clark, and many more. I can't really see how he would gain from being in a soap, though he may have come across as a bit dismissive of them because he does seem to take himself very seriously. Ian McKellen has much more of a sense of fun and I loved watching him in Corrie.

John Merrick, although in real life the name was actually Joseph Merrick

Just what I was thinking

Does that mean it would be inverse snobbery if say, Barbara Windsor, were to say that she would never want to be on the stage in Shakespeare ??

Just personal preference, surely ?? - something which we are all allowed to express
