Overfeeding probably. Don't feed now for 3 days. Fish will be fine, honestly, and won't starve. I've left mine 5 days when we went away and they were fine without food. So, no food at all for 3 days. Did you clean the filter sponge in tap water? Bad idea. Clean it in some water from the tank in a bucket. Tap water kills the beneficial nitrifying bacteria in the sponge!! Buy a gravel "vacuum cleaner" from an aquarium shop. You just "hoover" the gravel to remove waste matter, and don't need to remove any gravel.

How big is your tank and what fish do you have? Is it overstocked? Have you increased the number of fish recently?

Leave them without any food now for 2 or 3 days in case you've been overfeeding. Don't worry as they will be fine. Honestly! Fish can go a week without any food. I've kept fish for 30 years and cloudy water is a build-up of bacteria for some reason. After their fast, feed once a day, sparingly. Not 2 or 3 times a day as it says on the fish food drums! That's to sell more!

Get some Corydoras catfish. They're very hardy, stay fairly small and eat food which falls to the bottom. Make sure some does or they'll starve!! Lovely fellas to watch too, always grubbing about.

You may have over cleaned it and are now experiencing an algae bloom. Do not get any more fish until it has settles. Also don't remove the gravel and clean it, you'll kill the good stuff that breaks down fish waste. Get a gravel cleaner, they are cheap and easy to use.

You have probably got "Glass Rot". add a teaspoon of white wine vinegar to the water and it should start to see results in a week, and the problem will be gone in a month or two.

EDIT: ONE teaspon as a ONE off! DO not add one each day/month like my neigbour did! His glass rot was gone, but so were his fish.

Try adding some 'good bacteria' you can buy it at any aquarium place...it helps redress the balance of over cleaning.....it can also be used to help start the bacteria cultures in your sponge filter when starting up a new tank.

I can testify to them being great pets. Unfortunately, I went away, (only for a couple of days), and when I came back, they had been consumed by the others. i cried for days! Out of interest, has anyone ever kept those water lizards? Amy
