cheers FIRE!

*rubs hands with glee*

Right then, I'll just start with a couple of bassists....

Les Claypool (Primus)
Mike Mills (REM)
Robert Trujillo (Metallica, although their stuff doesn't do him justice at all)
John Myung (Dream Theater)
Flea (RHCP)

Anyone got any more? (or some guitarists for that matter? I'm more interested in bass at the moment 'cos I'm gonna start learning to play soon...)

Depends on the style of bass playing you aspire to but my fav's:

John Entwhistle - The bass playing on Won't Get Fooled Again
Paul McCartney (Listen to Abbey Road)
And the very underated Andy Fraser from Free

All pioneers in the art of rock bass playing!

Agreed... I can only go by the stuff I listen to and the stuff that inspires me, which is mainly Metal in its various forms and sub-genres.... i've been listening to Cynic today and the quality blows my head off every time....

It's all subjective anyway, but it's fun hearing what rocks other people...

My favourite bassist would have to be Jean-Jacques Burnel, he's so distinctive
And Martyn P. Casey (Bad Seeds) for the same reason.
And Flea, of course.

Guitarist (top of my head), Slash, James Dean Bradfield.

Best guitarists:

Jimmy Hendrix

As a pale and exceptionally predictable indie kid, I can't see past Jonny Marr on guitar and, for 'Atmosphere' alone, Peter Hook on bass.

Guitarists:
Brian May (Queen)
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
Lyndsey Buckingham (Fleetwood Mac)
John Mayer (solo)

As for bassists (both electric and upright)
Flea (RHCP)
Mike Dirnt (Greenday)
Jim Creeggan (Barenaked Ladies - watch this guy play his upright on Brian Wilson - amazing)
Les Claypool (Primus)

got a bit mangled there ....what i meant was that he didn't play on St Anger (Bob Rock did)and is technically capable of far more than the stuff he's playing for them at the moment... have you ever heard his work with Infectious Grooves?

Agreed on Cliff Burton though.... it was a sad day for metal when he left us

To be quite honest, I've been into Metallica for years now and him joining the band is like having stranger in your own home. I'm sure I'll get used to him tho! lol. Never heard Infectious Grooves, are they any good? Didn't he play bass for Ozzy at some point too?

Robert Trujillo is a monster. He is awesome. The guy is all you want in a bass player. Big, angry and nuts. fantastic.

IMO I don't think his stage prescence suites Metallica, like you say, he's 'nuts'!!! But I'm sure I'll get used to him.

Bassists - Can't really ignore Sting either. I never could crack the bass line on the "Bed's Too Big Without You" properly - and he sung it at the same time!!

The bass player in 80's outfit Japan, Mick Karn, another great and inovative player.

As for guitarists - outside of the usual top ten, check out Micky Jones from the Welsh rock band Man - phenominal talent with a band who never got the recognition they deserved - and they're still going strong.

Yeah, and Jerry Cantrell... the guy is in demand!

He used to play in Suicidal Tendencies as well... Metallica couldn't have hired anyone better. Will be interested to see how much input he's allowed into their future stuff....

Thought I recognised him from somewhere else, Suicidal Tendencies supported Metallica for their Black Album tour in '92. I saw this gig in Berlin. Was quality, 1st concert I'd been to!
