The X Factor results show has always been a tense half hour of top entertainment - but to add to the drama, tonight's viewers will see their favourite format updated with a brand new twist.

For the first time ever, the two bottom-placed contestants will choose an all-time favourite track to perform while the nation registers their final votes. Until this point, contenders have performed the night's rehearsed track again.

The change is proving popular. After all, it's a fabulous opportunity for the contestants to take fate into their very own hands, showing the public exactly what they - and their voices - can do.

Each song will handpicked by the desperate contenders themselves, each believing the track they have chosen will give them the best chance of staying in the show.

Of course, we have no idea yet which contestants will face this final trial in their fight for X Factor survival.

But you can be sure that whoever steps up to the microphone to sing again will put every inch of their heart and soul into a song they know and believe in.

This track will be known as the Song for Survival. The result of the vote is in your hands. So listen to the performances, and then decide. Who will you choose to save?

Good. This keeps the tension, but takes away biased and contrived decisions.

When I first read it I wasn't too keen, but I like the idea now. It will stop the bias/tactical voting and let the public decide who they want to keep. There will be no Cheryl saying "I can't vote between you two, babes" accompanied with crying.

Hmm.. I don't know about this.. I always did like the judges deciding on the bottom two. I found it tense when they couldn't choose who to send home.

Yes, the whole pantomime of the Judges decision, with the Producer on the floor whispering to Simon will be gone. Of course it's more money into the coffers of Syco and ITV.......interesting change.

Takes away the whole point of the 4 Judges, and Judges vote.

They need not of replaced Sharon. Could of just had 3 Judges selecting the final 12 together.

I don't mind them picking a different song they have previously sung thoughout the competition to sing in final showdowns; but Judges vote should remain.

I like it as we will see more material from each act.

However, there's a big problem with this. Any cute boy in the bottom 2 will almost, without fail, automatically survive, as the teenies will immediately vote for him and it will work as its a 2-way vote.

We'll see more (crap) blokes in the final stages than ever before, unless 2 of the pretty boys are up against each other *thinks Scott and Eoghan*

At least it'll get rid of situations like Hope last year, where they're not very good but keep escaping because they fit into Cowell's masterplan, despite people not liking them.

Good.

That also means that there's no indication of who's leading the votes. Very unpredictable now.

No bottom two = no indication of who the other person is at the bottom of the votes. Last year we knew Hope and Alisha had no chance because they kept being in the bottom two. This year we won't have a CLUE!

Hmmm

Unless they just say who is evicted and then let them play for the last time. No need for two performances?

The tweenie vote didn't to Daniel and Andy any favours last year. I don't think it exists tbh.

No, there's still a bottom 2. Its still the same in that respect.

Brilliant change, IMO. New performances that will actually count for something and some proper tension on the show. The results show will now be alot better, IMO.

It says the bottom 2 acts will be revealed in the 2nd show. So we still know which 2 acts were least liked.

They then sing a song of their choice each as the lines remain open for these 2 acts only.

Surely this will give the person/group who sings first in the showdown an advantage.

Yeah, it didn't because they probably thought they were both safe.

And then they ended up in the bottom 2 - and the judges managed to get rid of them.

However, what will happen now is that the teenies that think that the eye candy is safe and don't vote prior to the bottom 2 being revealed will be on repeat dial once one of the hotties is in the bottom 2, thereby saving them.

I'm convinced this will happen. However, if it doesn't, and it actually goes on talent, I'll be ecstatic.

Oh right.

I thought that it'd just go straight to the evictee.

Oh no. We have to wait even bloody longer for the results to be announced. Should have kept the judges vote - that's what the defined it from other talent shows!

That's a good point - if they're going to do this, they cannot open the lines until both acts have sung - otherwise it is completely unfair and biased.

Be nice to try it, however the judges vote has saved the show some years.

Personally I hate the 'No Judges Vote' thats what defined the X-Factor.

No tense voting like when 'Sharon' refused to vote. Louis voting Maria 'off' over irish Conways. Leading Sharon to storm off in protest and Simon to kick off his own act 2 weeks later.

No Bev & Hope 'Deadlock' situations.

The new material and 2nd song is good rather than same song weve already heard. But Judges voting should remain.

That's probably why the results show is now 45 minutes. I hope the lines don't open until both bottom 2 acts sing their song though, or it's unfair. I have a feeling they'll just leave the lines open during the performances, which is wrong.
