Watching tonight's first episode of the X Factor on TV3 in Ireland, numerous messages appeared, informing Irish viewers "Voting is not open to viewers in the Republic of Ireland"

Voting has been open since the Season 2, the first series broadcast on TV3. For whatever reason, it's no longer open to Irish viewers.

I'm opening this thread, hoping that it'll have some affect resulting in a return to Irish voting. Even if you don't reside in the ROI, please voice your opinion here. It's quite not fair our voting right is this competition has just been revoked.

I don't get your problem, your not being singled out, the French aren't allowed to vote either.

In fairness the Irish do get the X Factor simulcast live on TV3. So if TV3 are paying for the programme then the viewers should be allowed to vote.

Be thankful that you can save a few Euro..we're in the financial do do, so I am glad I have no reason to fill ITV coffers.

No we don't. I watch X Factor on TV3 and this year for the first time we are continually told that we cannot vote.
Does anyone know why?

If the Irish have been allowed a vote in the past they should still be allowed one. Especially if they are contributing to the viewing figures.

I'm not from Ireland yet I still think it is unfair that despite the show being shown at the same time as everyone else in the UK, they still aren't allowed to vote, despite being able to do so in the past. It must suck for people, although personally, I wouldn't mind because I don't vote anyway, but I wouldn't like it if the opportunity to vote was taken away from me.

The difference is that X Factor is specifically broadcast on TV3 at the same time and TV3 is basically English ITV. If they don’t own it outright then they have a big part of it, which is why it is so similar. X Factor 1 was shown only on UTV and Kate Thornton kept saying “phone numbers for viewers in RoI will be coming up shortly”. By X Factor 2 she said “phone numbers for viewers in RoI are on your screen now”.

The same thing happened in the last series of Dancing on Ice - over the subtitle of the phone numbers there was notice about it not being open to RoI viewers. I thought I read that it to do with the voting scandal in the same way that regulators, whatever they are called, had banned text voting as there isn’t time to verify them but that they hoped that both could return to shows at some time in the future.

Apparently BBC programs never use Irish votes even before satellite (no Irish postcard vote for Blue Peter dog names) although the BBC has been watched in Dublin and the west coast since it started but apparently its illegal under their charter to have ‘non-UK input’. ITV companies can get votes (and thus money) from where they like - X Factor and the other shos are watched live throughout southern Europe on Sky - but its just the problem about voter confidence in the results after the alleged scandals.

Big Brother also stopped ROI voting this year after votes were mis-counted or something in the Belinda vs Rex (I think? ) eviction.

The X factor didnt audition in Northern Ireland either as the talent wasn't good enough according to Simon in one of the early shows. Just our luck that Eoghan goes to somewhere in England to audition and proves Simon right!

Well, just shows how silly ITV is not taking money & telephone votes from Ireland...look at the share price fall!
TV3 has improved access to ITV shows and allows SKY EPG coverage of programmes (necessary for SKY+ recording). So well done TV3 & SKY! ITV have alienated ROI SKY viewers by failing to pay for EPG coverage. As an ex-UK living in ROI I don't understand why SKY don't simply offer the EPG ITV option as an additional cost (as ITV clearly will not pay this!).
Anyway, bring the voting back on X Factor please....listen to viewers on this one! TV3 coverage of XTRA Factor (normally ITV2) is clever stuff.....especially with the lovely Holly!
