Hi All,

I am looking for an mp3 player with a built-in fm transmitter for listening to albums etc over the car radio. I have looked at the Netac offerings but these have had mixed reviews. Does anyone know of other devices? I don't really want the mp3 player/separate transmitter option as in ipod/itrip combo, as I don't want to pay Apples's inflated prices.

The Nokia N85 phone due out sometime in next 3-4 months has this built it.

So you can dump all your MP3's in playlists onto the phone and you will not have to take anything extra with you to the car.

I bought a 2GB MP4 player from Netto last Saturday for £15. (a 4GB was on sale for £24) It has a 1.8TFT colour screen and a FM transmitter. It contains a rechargeable battery good for 5.5 hours. The transmitter has a range of at least 100mtrs using the headphone lead as the aerial.
What I find funny is that they do not play MP4 files?
MP3 or WMA for audio and AMV(disc supplied) for video.
Just a point of interest WMA encoded audio seems twice as effective as MP3. MP3@128k=WMA@64k. Net result double the record time.

That sounds ideal - is the build quality etc any good?

The player is badged as Tevion, it comes with an inbuilt "Tetris" type game and as a 3 year guarantee.
I have just realised in my previous post I said I got it in Netto but it was ALDI!

100m range? I thought these gadgets were only allowed to transmit a few metres (which is all you need in the car) so that they didn't interfere with other FM broadcasts, or become a nuisance to others?

Have you got more details on the Tevion? What model is it? Just as well it's Aldi, my nearest Netto is over 100 miles away!

To answer posts above.
The model is a Tevion 7270. In the manual it gives you a Web page WWW.fasin8.co.uk. Select Tevion products and 2GB MP4 player Model 7270. You will find all the details you need.
Using 87.5MHz and placing my player in the window of my house with the earpiece cable used as the aerial (vertical) I can confirm that it transmitted well in excess of 100mtrs.

I can't find it via that page.

I have this one which has excellent sound quality and typically goes up to around 10 metres (although with an extended audio lead I get up to around 30m out of it).

you limit your choices with that.
if you just buy a universal fm transmitter and a regular mp3 player it will give you more options.
that being said..fm transmitter quality is mediocre at best..

What's the audio quality like from the built in fm transmitter. Alot of the cheap ones can sound very basey. Techfocus is a good quality 'stand alone' unit

That looks like exactly the same one I've got.

Mine is very good indeed although I think the production quality in the Chinese factory is a bit hit and miss so if you're unlucky you may get a duffer.

You can get them cheaper (£5.48 inc postage) on Amazon though:

The N78 (out now) has one as well.
