Spice Girls - Viva Forever
ok years on I'm still wondering what the hell the video is about.
I really don't understand the story and what happens. I've just seen it on the vault and it's still as confusing as the first time I saw it in "1999"? Does anyone know what the video means or what you think it's about. Thanks

Viva Forever was 1998.
I never used to get past the first minute or so to figure out the story

One of their best songs this, and I absolutely love the video.
I always assumed is was about losing somebody close to you and always being able to store them away in your memories. (the bit where he throws the cube into the sweet dispenser). Its quite sad actually. I'm not quite sure why the kid was stored inside a rubix cube, but hey ho - who am i to question the mighty Spice Girls

I love the song - one of their best and really is timeless, but the video till this day I'm not keen on, I remember wanting a video with all the girls in it, not the fairies.

There's a few theories/explanations on this page: http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=63864
Always makes me well up this song, very sad. I think it's about losing/drifting apart from someone you really care about, trying your hardest to repair things (trying to solve the rubix cube in the video), but the only thing you can do is move on and let life go on (putting the egg back into the machine with the cube in) I could be totally wrong though. |

The video is confusing at times but Viva Forever is my favourite Spice Girl song. Love it!

O M G that mixed with the song is enough to tip someone over the edge. How sad ![]() I'm going thro that right now funny enough :-S Oh dear. Time for a little listen to the song I think. See if I can get something from it. I haven't really paid attention to the lyrics. :-S |

Apparently the song was inspired when Melanie C lost a close relative. The video seems to be about losing a friendship or perhaps losing innocence in growing up and moving on.
The video is open to all sorts of interpretations but to me - the children come across a toy egg which hatches a toy chicken, the children both follow the chicken to the next egg where the fairies emerge (which look like the girls). The younger child continues to run after the chicken as the eldest stays with the fairies. These fairies play with the child and are even seen telling the child some sort of secret. They then take the child on a journey and end up placing them inside the rubix cube. The other child comes back just as the eldest disappears. Solving the rubix cube to the child represents coming to terms with his loss and the mixed emotions he's experiencing. He eventually places the cube into an egg and throws it inside the giant vending machine which symbolises storing the memories of their time together - the memories will 'live forever'. I also think the youngest child continues to run after the chicken because he isn't ready to grow up yet, so he's still chasing the first 'surprise'. The eldest hears a secret which may symbolise lost innocence and growing up. |

The most confusing thing about this video was trying to figure out was the kid the fairies took away a boy or a girl?

One of my fave Spice Girl tracks but overshadowed in my opinion by Geri's exit so I don't think it got the full exposer it deserved.
Having said that, I'm pretty sure it's one of their best selling singles. But then every single sold millions so it's hard to tell. |

I do love the video. I think the video works much better with the spice fairies then it would had they actually filmed one in person. |

Even for non-fans, it is a great song by Spice Girls standards. I remember it silencing many critics when it was released as their best work artistically. Makson, it's a boy
. I think the song's about losing something whether that be a friendship, loved on etc. and although it hurts initially, time heals it hence the lyrics "live forever, for the moment...".

It really is an emotional song, and so evocative of that summer for me. I remember they used it on a TV World Cup montage as well (with the Beckham connection, of course). |
