connectivity frustration
What a great site and hopefully worth the fiver it cost to register.
I have a very frustrating connectivity problem with my sky box, spanish digital decoder and Sony STR DE485E stereo receiver. I could at one time get pro logic/surround sound playing through my speakers when watching UK TV via sky digibox but for some reason the sound is now only coming out of the centre speaker. The DVD works with 5:1 ok. Can anyone suggest how i should connect the sky box and spanish digital tv decoder to my STR DE485E? At present the set up is: Pace 2600C1 TV scart - Philips FTR9955 scart ext1....no pro logic sound, though the STR DE485E indicates there is DVD JVC S302 RGB video out - Philips FTR9955 scart ext2....works ok DVD JVC S302 PCM/Stream caxial - STR DE485E dvd/LD in coaxial....works ok Spanish TV digital decoder - Philips FTR9955 scart ext3 hope that makes sense, as I said, the dvd sound is great, it is just the sky and TV decoder that aren't. Any help greatly appreciated Last edited by slider6542 : 12-10-2008 at 12:24. Reason: make it more clear |

Given the info you provided is correct and that no wiring has changed since it last worked correctly, then I'd have a look at the amp settings first.
It could be some decoding mode on the amp such as mono that's making the sound come out of the centre only. |

sorry, there have been some changes hence the frustration. I removed the VCR from the chain, the Sky went throught that whereas it now goes directly to the TV FTR9955.

Hi Niall, the stereo receiver has no scarts, The sound input is via coaxial from the dvd and phono leads form audio out on the tv to dvd/LD on the STR DE485E . I wasn't aware the sky box could be set to stereo. How is that done?
As regards to AV socket on the telly, I'm not sure if it allows the signal to go back to the telly. |

Niall, many thanks, I just changed the sky box from mono to stereo and all is well. The reason I didn't consider it was that this box is recently borrowed as my sky box has been zapped by lightning taking out the LNB power outage. My original was set to stereo.
Almost felt stupid when I saw the settings. Many thanks again |

Ah, OK. It's probably going to be quicker to run through a set-up from scratch rather than second-guessing all the menu options and settings.
DVD to TV: - connect it as you have at the moment. TV input Ext 2 Pace Satellite to TV: - PACE > RGB SCART to FTR9955 > EXT 1 (RGB) *Pace menus > Picture settings > Video Out > RGB > Save New Settings *Pace menus > Sound settings > Audio Out > Stereo > Save New Settings [* the exact names and functions might be different for your box] Spanish TV digital decoder to TV: - digital decoder > SCART to FTR9955 > EXT 3 composite video. * Menu settings - check that a stereo audio output option is enabled if available. Also NICAM or ProLogic if available. Sound from FTR9955 to Sony AV Amp: - FTR9955 > audio out L R > Sony AV amp > one of the AV inputs. PF9955/FTR9955 menu settings: The manual I have doesn't give much detail, but you're looking to make sure that the inputs are set to accept stereo sound. Also check if there's an option to send mono/stereo to the audio outputs - if so then set that stereo. |

if the telly has any stereo output e.g red and white phono outputs then connect them to the inputs in the Sony reciever
then whatever you are watching on the telly, the sound will come through the reciever and so will cut the number of wires going to and from the box |
