I have just replaced my old KDL-32S2000 with a KDL-40W4000 and could do with a bit of advice. Firstly, the "W" appears to be a nice bit of kit and I am pleased with it. I am using it with a Sky+box, not Sky HD. The Sky+ box is fed in via the AV1 scart, which I think is the correct as I am not sure what the AV2 (smartlink) does and what's the benefits? I Have a WEE or my Sony DVD Recorder (RDR-HXD80) fed to the AV2 via a switchable scart adaptor. Actually while typing this, its dawned on me to use a HDMI connection lead for the DVD Recorder which I guess is straight forward, thus doing away with the adaptor and just have the WEE input via the AV2 scart input.

Anyway, my main issue is the Screen Format. On my older 32" it was set to Wide and there was no problems watching all the Sky channels. When I set the 40W4000 to wide some of the channels (mainly ones which my 7 year old daughter watches) reverts to 4:3. I know I can set to Smart but this effects the overall image. I have also just noticed the the smart setting sometimes show an upside down arrow by it when you view the setting by the remote. I guess in simple English the question is how do I set the format for best quality, full screen, across all the Sky channels? Again I didn't have this issue with my older Sony - I just had it set to the Wide viewing format.

Well if you have taken the trouble to read this and can help, thank you. Also what is your opinion on best Screen Viewing settings? (For both TV's as the smaller one is now in my bedroom, but I just use the digital mode for the smaller one) neither are in a backlight position.

Any help / advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Ther TV is doing exactly what it's supposed to, you need to turn off 'auto format switching', it's on one of the menus, then it won't do what it's supposed to, and will stay in widescreen on 4:3 signals.

Don't use 'Stupid' mode, I've no idea why it was ever called 'Smart' - no matter what mode you feed it, it gets it wrong!

Thanks for this. I understand what you are saying but after playing with the buttons and getting the operating instructions out I still cant find any menu that refers to "auto format switching"

Can anyone assist me (you can probably gather I am not a technical person!)

Thanks

Without a set in front of me I can't tell you where it is (and I hate the PS3 type menus), but I seem to recall it's under the 'setup' menu somewhere.

I have to 'find it' every time I take one out, I really do hate the PS3 style menus on them

Perhaps I'm just too old?, I'm pleased your daughter is happy though
