Yes, you can connect via the UHF aerial socket. Any aerial you have plugs into the VCR and then a similar flylead goes to the TV. This secondary 'coax' cable would need to have a pin plug at one end and a socket at the other, although it's common to use a small inline adapter at one end. Down this secondary cable the VCR transfers video playback and also TV reception. Once rigged up, you'd need to set the TV to 'Aux' channel or tune into the video on an unused channel (VCR will have a test screen to do so), then the TV is left on that and you'd change TV channels via the VCR (which of course has its own tuner).

This would work until the analogue signal is switched off throughout Britain. The VCR playback would not be affected but if you wanted to continue receiving TV broadcasts then you'd need a freeview box (and suitable indoor/outdoor Freeview aerial.) Again, even though your TV has no scart socket and digital TV is outputted via scart, you can loop through the VCR, which should have a scart input. You can then watch digital TV on the old TV and record off freeview (via the VCR's aux channel).

If the older TV and video have phono sockets on them, a pair of left and right sockets like on hi-fi separates, the TV could also be connected to the VCR that way, but this would only provide video playback.

VCR's have a modulator, so can be used on an old TV just like they are another off-air analogue channel (there are a VERY few exceptions to this, but not many).

It is how it was always done from the old days of the Ferguson VHS recorder till recently but watch out though - VCR DVD combis don't have the output modulated. Only the aerial signal goes in and back out again. What was recorded or the DVD signal only goes out via SCART or HDMI. No good for an old TV.
