Tesco cheap meat slices

I was in Tesco earlier looking for something to put in my lunchtime roll. Anyway, I came across this packet of beef slices at the remarkably low price of 99p for 4 oz. Alarm bells immediately rang, especially as the slices, which were an unattractive uniform brown in colour, looked like they had been cut from a cow with square legs. At least I can give Tesco the credit for being open about things; the front of the packet said, "Cooked reformed beef with added water." A check on the back showed that they only contained 88% beef, the rest being water, phosphates to keep the water in, starch and such like.

These appeared to be part of a 99p range; there was also ham and chicken slices. Now, I may be being totally unfair and these products could actually be absolutely delicious and worth twice the price. Has anyone dared to try them out?

I'm not a fan of any processed meat in the vein of ham, chicken or turkey slices etc so nope I def haven't tasted them....

If I do have meat in my sarnies it will be from the bone / joint of whatever we've had or else I occasionally buy some sliced chicken breast...

I simply cannot eat anything that is labelled up (on front of packet) as being made with meat and water

Was talking to a woman in Tesco last week and she buys the cheap packs of meat for her cat. My daughter only wants ham in her packed lunch sandwich but I get Premium smoked in the packs, dearer but better quality. Had it kept going off next day from the deli counter. Makes me wonder how fresh it is from the joints there.

I used to buy packs of ham but began to wonder how it was made and what went into it.

The premium packs are quite expensive so I decided to buy a small gammon joint and cook it myself. The flavour and quality are much better plus you get delicious stock for winter soup making.
Once the gammon is cool, you can get a lot of slices of very lean and tasty meat for sandwiches, or go half-and-half....cut a couple of thick slices when warm and have it for dinner with pineapple, new potatoes, veg or salad and slice the remainder when cold.

i used to buy the packs of 20 slices of ham from sainsburys basics range for about 70p for in sandwiches and toasties and it tasted fine to me. I couldnt afford deli ham then.

I prefer the basics cooked meat to the fancy stuff for some reason!

From Tesco around £4 but with some of the premium packed meats costing around £2.50 for 6 slices, it works out at very ggod value for money.

If you find gammon a bit salty for your taste, soak it in cold water for a couple of hours, drain then add enough cold water to cover the joint, bring to the boil and them simmer slowly for about an hour and a half.
