What DVD's to buy??
I've kept my finger off the pulse recently when it comes to DVD's.
Can you guys give me recommendations of any decent DVD's any region worth buying now or in the next couple of months. Which ones do you think have the best action, sound, picture quality etc. Rate them out of 10. Thanks |

The best one I have ever got are the Austin Power movie ones. This is cos the picture quality is excellent (it's also in widescreen), and the amount of extras - wow! - ranging from interviews to deleted scenes. There is even an hidden menu in the second movie!
Another movie I've heard about that is meant to good on DVD is The Matrix. To find out more information about DVDs, may I suggest you look at the 2 best internet service websites (to me anyway!): DVD Street and DVD World. Cheers. Mark |

To be honest, there hasn't really been that many big releases in the last couple of months that i have been interested in (in Region 1 at least) and most of the major R2 releases i already had in R1
out of the stuff i have bought I would recommend (all Region 1 unless stated)... The Emperors New Groove - The Ultimate Groove (2 Disc) Miss Congeniality Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon The Road To El Dorado also, i have heard that the Region 2 When We Were Kings is good (it includes both the Rumble in the Jungle and Thrilla in Manilla fights) these are a bit older but they are good movies/DVDs... Bring It On (go for Region 1) Charlie's Angels (R1 or 2 - although R1 has the Final Fantasy trailer on it) Scary Movie These are the releases i shall definitely be buying in the next month or so... June 26th - Unbreakable (2 Disc) July 24th - Akira (2 Disc) there are 2 disc special editions of the Die Hard movies coming out soon if you like that kind of thing and Transformers Region 2 should be coming out pretty soon also and looks like it will be better than the R1 version Autumn/Winter looks better... August - Silence of the Lambs/Hannibal Special Editions September - Simpsons Season 1 October - Snow White and the Seven Dwarves; Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace November - The Mummy Returns ? - Shrek (Dreamworks are usually pretty quick to release their DVDs in America so this might be out by the end of the year) and there are various re-releases of older basic titles (particularly from Beuna Vista) |

Where did you see that Stars Wars Episode 1 is being released? I presume that and The Mummy Returns are release dates for America. How long, on average, is it before we see Region 2 releases of the films?
Sorry I cannot help you Nikhil with latest releases. I think the newest releases I have got are Double Jeopardy and Chicken Run. The latter had excellent dts sound. The former does not use the back speakers very much. We have just seen Gone in Sixty Seconds on video and thought this one would be a good one to see on dvd because it had good sound in dolby prologic. All my other dvds are of the action variety but of films that have been out for a while which you probably already have. If I purchase a latest release one I will let you know. |

Cheers Wicket and Rezabelady.
I already have the emporers new groove, crouching tiger hidden dragon, double jeopardy and chicken run and have seen gone in 60 seconds, charlies angels and scary movie at the cinema. how is Miss congeniality, is it reallyworth buying on DVD? I've also heard the rumor that Star wars episode one will eventually get released at the end of the year, possibly with the other three but more likely on its own. (Personally i thought that was the cheesiest of the 4 films by far!! )

Gladiator is the best DVD around at the moment. Sound - particularly the DTS is breathtaking.

Rattus, what other dvds would you recommend for sound quality? I have seen Gladiator once on video and though it was okay I wouldn't buy it on dvd. I like action movies but some dvds do not have as good a sound track as you would have thought. I have The Matrix which has really good sound and uses all the speakers. Wicket

The Jackal has a decent DTS soundtrack (R1 - the films isn't the best though
)If you're looking for sound, strangely Disney DVD's are very good for them. I've got to say the Gladiator sound is top notch though!! |

Thanks Nikhil, I am not struck on the Jackal but am surprised that you give the Disney's dvds a good sound rating. I had been steering away non-action films because the sound effects are not very good. When you say Disney are you just referring to the cartoon films (Buena Vista) or to Disney as a whole ie Hollywood Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Miramaz Films and Dimension Films?
We do have a lot of Disney videos which I had not considered replacing but if Toy Story 1 & 2 are immensely improved on dvd I may consider it. I must admit I am tempted to get 'The Gladiator' just for the sound quality alone as I have read so many outstanding comments about it. As you have probably gathered I am very much into the sound effects of a film with the picture quality being an added bonus. It is a bit frustrating seeing Region 1 releases being in dts though and only a few over here. Wicket |

I have got those dvds you suggest barring Miss Congeniality and I intend to get Terminator 2 when it is released here. I presume you have Terminator 1 is the sound substantially improved in Dolby 5.1?. We already have the video version of it but were intending to buy the dvd version.
When you have purchased dvds with DD EX and DTS ES do they sound even better that DD 5.1 when you are running the sound through a DD 5.1 and DTS amp or do they just sound like they are in DD 5.1? Many thanks. |

Definitely - especially when you consider that the original sound mix was mono!Quote:

i think that's the only disc i have with either and there doesn't seem to be any real difference with a DD5.1 amp - i have heard T2 through a DD EX amp and the extra channel really completes the rear soundstage

Thanks rez, I had a look at those links you suggested, most interesting. I fancy buying Phantom Menace and Mummy Returns as soon as they are released here.
I had forgotten that Terminator 1 was in mono so there will be a big difference. There goes another £20! Lucky you being able to listen to a DD EX amp. I fancy one of these but with having just bought a new amp and the EX ones being so expensive it is out of the question. No doubt I will get one when this one breaks and the price has come down. Then I will be fancying the next one up which has speakers in the ceiling though my husband doesn't like these because he thinks they would look stupid! He has probably got a point but wouldn't the sound be fantastic? Many thanks for your help. |

The sound is very good on the jurassic park 1 & 2 disks. Although make sure you get the DD 5.1 version, not the DTS, as for some reason the DTS soundtrack is not very good. Other recommends would be, blade, seven (special) and fight club (special) these are all great disks.

I agree too that blade and fight club have got some excellent sound!! Wicket- I was talking about the animated disney films. You'll find the more recent the film the better the sound. (Remember also that most of the Disney films are THX certified, that recognition is on nearly all of the really decent sounding dvds.) Listening DTS ES or DD EX on a normal DTS/DD amp will make no difference in the sound as the extra channel is downmixed into the other channels so you should just get your normal 5.1 quality sound. Keep the recommendations coming!!

I liked The Cell enough after having rented it to want to buy it.
![]() The Matrix seems to want to install a program called "PCFriendly DVD" but for the life of me I can't get this program to work. Still, it's a good one even without that. Apparently there are known problems of playing The Matrix on DVD players made by LG .... because although it's standards compliant, some of these players get confused. Erm, I suppose it depends on what your taste in films is, though, doesn't it? |

Each to their own of course but reading this thread and people saying to buy a certain DVD cause the sound effects are good seems like strange criteria to me - surely its the whether you like the movie or it has a good storyline. At least with me the storyline comes before anything!

Thanks for that information syphon. I cannot wait to buy Shrek.
Richard nobody buys a dvd for the sound effects naturally you only buy it if you like the story and can watch it again and again. When you have a home cinema system you appreciate the way the system handles the sound and brings the movie to life which is what we are talking about. I would never buy a dvd just because it was known to have good sound effects it has to be one that I can watch repeatedly. |

Personally I think the thing that benefits most, soundtrack wise, on DVD is the score. Films with a really good score are in my opinion lifted to be a cut above their usual self on DVD. Gladiator has a fantastic score, as does Apollo 13 and many others.

The simpsons season one is coming out next month on a 3 disc set. Mmmmmmmmmmm Boxset. DVDPopcorn.co.uk have it for under £32, I have pre-ordered. I don't know what the soundtrack/effects will be like DOH in 5.1 sound? I think not........
I have invested in every single MGM James Bond movie and they (In my opinion) represent great value for money. They have lots of extras in the form of documentarys etc plus full audio commentries and the more recent films have kick ass 5.1 soundtracks. I'm not sure but I think they maybe THX certified although they don't have the THX Signature thing at the beginning. You can get any 2 for £30 in your local virgin shop. It has to be said that I am something of a bond freak however. Andy |
