Does anyone know? It should'nt be one bundled with broadband etc, just the line on its own. The cheapest I know of is Toucan priced at £8.99 p/m. Are there any cheaper providers? I dont care for call charge costs.

Just check that the toucan one doesn't have a long contract (unless you intend to put a long contract broadband subscription on it).

it has 12 month contract which I dont mind. My isp is with Tiscali and I would have taken their free line package, but they require customers to go on the 8meg broadband. Their 8meg speeds are slower than dial up! I'm on their 4MB which gives me no troubles.

If your 4 meg is fine, how can their 8 meg be slower and comparable to dial up?

If you dont believe me I suggest you sign up! I think they throttle during the evenings.

And throttle they do! My average evening AND ALL weekend speed is around the 800Kbps mark - and occasionally drops below my upload speed!

If possible, ask to be downgraded to a lower speed. Anything apart from the 8meg is efficient and gives full speed. I've been on their 1MB, 2MB, 4MB ang 8MB. They've all given me top speeds all day long apart from the 8MB. It truly sucks.

That's not a bad idea. The only reason I went for the 8Meg was because it was unlimited use, but the other day I looked at my router settings and was surprised to see that my total usage (in and out) over the last 36 days was 8.4GB.
I'll have at look at Tiscali's website and see if there are any restictions and if so, what they are.
I suppose I might even be able to change tariff there as well? Tiscali CS is just about the worst i've ever encountered so it might be quicker that way!

They are able to offer you different tarrifs and prices over the phone, and these will not be available from the customer portal through their site. Best thing to do is call their cancellations line, as this is based in the UK, on 0845 077 4488 and tell them your speeds are like dog shite. Tell them you want to downgrade your speeds, and if they cant offer that I suggest you ask for a Mac code so you can leave. If you are still within your contract tell them you want a reduction in your monthly charge. When I went on their 8meg and found it was shite, I told then I wanted to go back to the 2meg. They gave this to me for £10 per month. Then I was given a free upgrade to 4megs, which I'm still on. If they want to give me a free upgrade on 8megs, I will refuse!

Back to topic - any cheap providers out there?

I'd be interested in knowing the difference between reminder call and alarm call on the Post Office pricing plan. Reminder call is 20p and alarm call is £4. If the reminder call service is what I'd use for basic early morning wake up calls, it would be worth me moving to them, but not at £4 a go unless the alarm call is an emergency services type thing?

Don't know if you want to use it through the internet but if you do, Vonage is only £5.99 per month with no line rental. There are a few one off fees to get started but it is cheap enough to make up for that. http://www.vonage.co.uk/call-plans/vplanuk/

There's many others including www.sipgate.co.uk where there is no monthly cost, you get an incoming local number of your choice of area and voicemail if you want to use it, as it is VoIP all the usual like caller display, call waiting, 3-way calling is part of the service, you just need an ATA like a Linksys PAP2 for around £25 or so and you connect up a DECT or Corded phone and as each port has a REN of 5 you can connect up extensions if you wished.

I think you guys need to read the thread title closely. I'm after line rental only - I couldn't care less for cheap calls because I wont be making any. The services you mentioned require a broadband connection, which means I'll already need to have a landline. Doh!!

No you don't need a landline for broadband.

For 3 years I had broadband without a landline (and used Sipgate and VoIPStunt for phone line and calls with a PAP2 ATA) - how? CABLE broadband - you don't need a landline.

With Sipgate there is NO line rental, you just pay cable for broadband.

Although, to be fair, there are many who, never having lived in a cabled area, may not know of cable or may only have heard of 'cable TV' and are not aware that cable can also deliver broadband.
