Vertical Banding on LCD

Just noticed a feint dark line down the right side of my 46in full HD Panel. You know those old Technicolour Super Wide-screen movies that look like three screens joined, that's kind of what it looks like.

I have my PC connected to it and have run through Solid Colours in my desktop, with brown it is most noticeable, with others it isn't visible at all.

Is this problem something that can just suddenly happen, I've been enjoying this screen for eight months. How picky are engineers - I can just see one looking at it and thinking I'm mad.

If you can reproduce it for him, it shouldn't be a problem - what make is it?.

It's a Samsung.

When I scroll through the Sky Guide the line is very visible on the blue background, so I should be okay.

Pretty miffed though, gave the screen a wipe to make sure it wasn't dirt.

It could be inside, LCD's aren't sealed.

I haven't even started paying for it yet, buy now pay nine months later, November is when I do.

Trying to decide whether I can live with it, or the embarrassment of an engineer telling me to.

I had my last TV for twenty years, so..

Get them out, the sooner the better - the vast majority of warranty faults are the LCD or Plasma panels - sounds like your LCD panel may need replacing?.

I had a fault (bug) on two brand new Phillips 23" LCD TV's 2 years ago which could only be replicated watching certain scenes in southpark. The fault only happened when one of the Southpark characters had a close up of their face, everything was fine until they blinked then the screen when super bright for 1/10th second.

A phone call to Philips and then Amazon was all it took to get the replacement and then the refund after finding that the replacement one was the same, but they were less than a week old.

My advice is to try and send it back or get it swapped but before you do that film or photograph the fault if possible.

I checked the Samsung website and you can contact them directly, I also seem to be just a mile a way from one of their service centre, which is great.

I did file an online repair request but can't log back in, site is useless to use.

Try again later.

Well that was over quickly, TV guy just had a look and said it was the panel.

Do they just replace it, or does the whole set get binned?

They will replace the set, a panel swap is usually quite a bit more than a replacement!

A service centre will replace the panel, NOT the set - they wouldn't even have a set to replace it with. The cost of the repair doesn't matter, the manufacturer SELLS the replacement panel to the service centre, who then claims the trade cost of the panel back, plus a fairly small 'contribution' towards the labour costs involved.

Unlike car warranty service, where you charge the going rate, TV service is only a small fixed fee.

Well the TV is a write off, I dealt with the seller not Samsung, they wanted me to fax my invoice - no fax.

Well that turned out quite well, bought it off a catalogue for a quite reasonable price considering the mark up they charge - did a lot of Googling. Had nine months of joyful viewing and now just as I'm about to make my first payment my panel fails and I get to order a new set on buy now pay in nine months, and they are also cheaper now.

Result all around.
