I used a cheap splitter from Maplins.

Did you buy a splitter? What you really want is a switch.

Splitter is one to many
Switch is many to one.

I guess you have bought a splitter and used it in reverse. Your lucky this worked at all.

I used the top splitter but I had to turn off SKY when using PS3

Then about 5 days ago the sound started dropping for a millisecond so I took splitter out and the sound is noew perfect only problem now is PS3 is not connected to my surround sound

Always use the right tool for the job.

The big clue is in the name SPLITTER. ie taking ONE thing and making TWO out of it. Not taking TWO things and make ONE which is combining. A splitter may work in reverse as a combiner but it is a compromise.

For a kick off, as you have discovered, if both are on at the same time you get an unholy mess. Which restricts what you can do with the equipment. The best solution is to use a switch which is specifically designed to take many sources and route them individually to one destination.

Thus avoiding all the problems with using a splitter for a job it was never designed for. And it won't matter with a switch if you have both devices on at the same time.
