HDMI lead. Strange problem.
Hello.
I have a puzzling problem regarding an HDMI lead. For the past 5 weeks or so I have had my LG DVD player connected to my TV via an HDMI lead. No problems - great picture etc. The LG player is HDMI 1080i up-conversion - but it worked. Yesterday I tried to watch a DVD and there was no sound. A message came up on the TV screen about 'not receiving an audio signal' ![]() I assumed the cable had failed - so tried a different cable. The same problem persisted. I hooked the DVD player up with a Scart and it was fine. Could the LG player's up-conversion have failed? I tried the input extension sockets (on the TV) with other equipment and they're fine. I hope I have explained this adequately as I am not very experienced with all this new technology.

I would check that the DVD player is outputting stereo over HDMI as this is all that your TV will understand.
It's possible it may have been changed to bitstream? regards Brian |

Hi Jimmy,
Don't know if this will help, but a couple of weeks ago I had the same problem, in the end it was fixed by turning of the tv off (properly not just standby) and turning it on again. After this 'reboot' the sound was working again !!!!!! don't ask me why !!!!!!!! I hope that this is of some use to you, if it doesn't work I'm sorry to have wasted your time.........but hey a potential 'free' fix can't be all bad !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck & I'll speak to you soon. bishy. |

As brian says it could be that somehow Bitstream has been selected (this is not relevant to scart only HDMI). Go into the menu & somewhere you will have the option to output either PCM or Bitstream, ensure PCM is selected (even if it already says it's on PCM change to Bitstream & back & make sure it's saved (could be a software glitch).

![]() It is now working fine again. I have no idea what bitstreams are - but the DVD player was set to bitstream (though it was working fine on this setting for the past 5 weeks) I changed it to PCM (I have no idea what these things are - or that they existed) and now it is working great again. I could have watched DVD's through a scart but after using an HDMI lead the quality is so different. Many thanks Brian & Paul (and everyone else) I really appreciate your help Thank you.

Depending on what you were watching, bitstream might have been fine before. If it was a TV series, or something like that, it would be encoded as PCM stereo in all likelihood, so no worries. Try a big movie, and it's encoded as Dolby Digital 5.1. Bitstream for that would be gibberish to your TV, it has no decoder. Setting the player to PCM stereo forces the player to decode the DD 'bitstream' and pass it as PCM. Bingo, sound.
