Id love to see something like that.... (Id certainly be interested in trying to audition for it!)

I had a thought about this only last week.

I wondered if it would be a good idea to suggest putting in a couple of members of the GBP in with the celebs next year (a bit like they did with Chantelle on BB??)... except of course they would just be a member of the GBP alongside the celebs.

It wouldnt work unless the participants were COMPLETE UNKNOWNS....

It depends on how it's done...how they cast it...what the talent show / soap opera balance is...how tabloidy they make it...

What would they be winning? With X-Factor/Fame Academy type shows (and I loved FA) or The Apprentice, Restaurant, etc etc, you're watching (in theory) people with talent who need a break, and it's only worth it if they have got a reasonable chance of making it afterwards (imo). With SCD you're watching people having a go at a new skill for fun, who then return to their real jobs - and are not intended to be dancers afterwards. If there was a programme where non-famous people learnt to dance with the pros, just for the fun, and won a glitterball, would they just be supposed to go back to their lives or become dancers/TV personalities? Because, from what I can see, once people have been on TV for weeks and weeks (and I'm not judging them for this, I have no idea what it's like or how addictive it might be) many, many of them seem to struggle to go back to their previous lives, they carry on wanting to be in the papers, and I find this quite sad.

I would love it if SCD ran a competition where people could win classes with Brendan, Anton et all - I can completely see why people would want to do this themselves. I would just rather it not be on TV. Sorry if that makes me a killjoy.”

JT, thank you! I have been trying to work out for ages why it is that I love Strictly but can't bear all those other reality shows (X factor etc). I think you have explained it perfectly. The celebs on SCD aren't desperate to succeed in the show in order to make a career out of dancing. They may well have other motives, but it is quite different from the other talent shows. I think that's why I like SCD - it's fun to watch, and when someone gets booted off the show, it's not the end of all their hopes and dreams.

So no, I wouldn't watch a Jo/e Public version of Strictly!

That's what I was thinking - I think they could justify it based on the SCD ratings

SCD is a really successful format and let it follow that format exactly, just with people with no previous dance experience.

IIRC Dance Fever ran in mid to late-summer and possibly with a football tournament on, so was never going to do very well but I expect the BBC allowed for it. I thought it was brilliant and the couple who won really deserved it.

Remember Dance X? That format really did not work and Arlene's choreography was miles better than Bruno's and she lost!

Genius idea! Brilliant! I would deffo. watch a Non-Celeb version of Strictly! No second thought!

I cannot believe I am 'bout to say this (For the record you all didn't hear this 'right? xD...) I would actually love to take part! Beside the fact that I haven't had any dance lessons I would give it a good go nonetheless!

JT summed it up perfectly. What makes Strictly better than the other reality shows is the absence of your typical ****wit wannabe, people who have nothing to offer just showing off in front of a camera.

As soon as you introduce a 'prize' beyond simply the prestige of winning the show (ie: fame and celebrity status) the programme would descend into the kind of crushing, soul-sucking freak show that is Big Brother/X Factor/Apprentice, populated by people with egos in inverse proportion to their talent.

I hope to god they don't sully the format with a version for Joe Public.

They must have a valid reason to drop it, so I guess it's nowhere close to SCD, though everyone thought that it'd be a big hit at the very beginning.

Why not offer two places (one man one woman) in the usual Strictly series, for members of the public to have a go? They could apply and be interviewed as if it was a job, and of course get paid just like the celebs.

I suppose the problem would be whether they would be at an advantage or disadvantage from the celebs and whether this might upset the whole format...

I agree with several posters who have said that even if you don't know someone in the beginning, you get to know them via the show and ITT and often end up supporting them.
