My grandad has just phoned and told me that at the top of his TV there is a black cloud covering the picture which is gradually getting bigger. I've heard of this sort of thing before but where the cloud is white not black, anyone know what this could be?

I'm sure his TV is a Samsung and it's an LCD, unfortunatly I can't pop around and check as he lives all the way in Skegness!

Thanks.

That will be a Thunder Cloud they are prevalent on the east coast you know seriously though it does sound as if the panel or perhaps even the backlight is going. Nigel will know best on this one. If still under warranty he needs a service call to Samsung, if not under warranty then it will most likely be cheaper to buy another TV

Sounds like smoke or dust inside the panel, does he smoke? - it kills TV's as well as people.

I don't really know, possibly for ventilation? - but you do get a tiny number which get dirty inside the screen.

This isn't a problem with Plasma, as they are sealed (because they run at half atmospheric pressure). There's also a protective screen in front of it, 'sealed' to the front of the PDP to prevent dust contamination. The front of an LCD that you see and touch, is actually the front of the LCD panel.

The newer Samsung models seemed to have a tinted glass panel on top.
