I'll be due an upgrade in a couple of months and was really impressed when a friend showed me his iPhone's internet capabilities where he could go on facebook easily and upload pictures etc - even my PSP can't do this!

Are there any other phones out there that offer a great internet browser like the iPhone, or are they all basic poor ones that can barely check yahoo mail?
Things such as bluetooth file transfers and no mp3 ringtones put me off the iPhone otherwise I'd just get this, but the new N96 and X1 look good - but do they offer great browsers?

Obviously whatever is recommended should have wi-fi so I can access the internet through my router for free rather than paying for wap/3g etc

The N95. One of the best browsers on a phone and has wi-fi. It's a bit old now (but still awesome) so go for the 8gb if you can.

Any phone you can install Opera Mini on will then have a decent browser.
Opera Mini has been a godsend.

The iPhone browser is actually quite limited compared to others, it has no Flash, for example. I would try a few other handsets and see what you like.

You can very easily add your own ringtones from mp3 to the iPhone if that's one of the major things stopping you getting one.

agreed i first use Opera mini if for some reason it does not do something properly i go to the built in one. The built in browsers in Nokia s60 3rd phones (N95/N96/N82 etc etc) have much improved browsers since i last used it, Opera mini is limited in doing some things that involve more than browsing for information, e.g. i wanted to read a PDF but opera could not d/l the PDF file i wanted properly (it tried unsuccessfully) the built in browser worked fine, so you want to try the facebook thing you saw on the iPhone i think is an app.

Well Nokia N95 8GB or N96 are my recommendations but you really want to be testing it for yourself before committing yourself to such pricey phones.

Firstly, your friend would have been uploading photos probably using the Facebook app available from the app store, which is technically not the browser.

The iPhone browser is still the best out there by a long way. I am not sure what the Android browser will be like. To be honest I have not missed Flash on the iPhone. Things that use Flash like YouTube, iPlayer and Facebook have their own applications for the iPhone so that is a non-issue really. The phones that do support flash don't work well at all with flash anyway.

No Bluetooth transfers is a bummer, although it is possible to easily make ringtones out of MP3s.

Of those only YouTube is flash. Facebook isn't flash (you can view the traditional facebook site on an iPhone) and iPlayer isn't an application - it's just a website.

But yeah - you don't miss flash as much as you'd think.

In reality aside from flash support and how they are implemented, S60/Android/Iphone native browser is based on the webkit source code so they will display the same way.......

you have to know how to use the native browser. the short cuts to zoom in and out, overview etc.

the iphone's browser looks nicer.

But even the Facebook application can't view flash Facebook videos can it? You mention that the application makes up for the lack of flash.

the committed iPhone fan will not acknowledge that there is any disadvantage to not having flash. they just wont accept it, you're wasting your breath.

My girlfriend has an iPhone. It looks the biz. But the Safari browser crashes all the time rendering it useless. The only way around the problem is to reboot the phone.

The browser crashes after 5 mins of use.

She now regrets buying the phone. Infact my contract runs out in December, i was going to buy an iPhone too but not anymore.
I hear the new HTC HD or 3G will have similar functions to the iPhone and is going to be much better.

iPhone = All jazz with no content
