Dermot 'Britian's top girl band' ER NO THEY ARE NOT!
I wouldn't normally pull X Factor up on little mistakes but when he referred to them as 'Britian's top girl band' what was he going off?
Because as it stands Sugababes are at roughly 6 million. Not to mention the 60 million selling Spice Girls. So I did a search and to date Girls Aloud have sold just under 5 million. Bananarama have even sold more! I hate mistaken facts. |

Sugababes have been around a bit longer, I think.
As it stands, GA sold more copies of their last album than Sugababes did of theirs so they currently have the lead. Two new albums this year though and it could go either way. |

I mean hell I'm no fan of the Spice Girls but Jesus they were massive! So much bigger on a worldwide scale than Girls Aloud so I'm not getting this 'Britian's biggest girlband' thing.

Don't they get labeled Britain's most successful girlband because they've had a certain amount of consecutive top ten hits?

Anyhoo... what does it really matter... didn't Peter Kay's show demonstrate that its all just hyperbole on X Factor anyway. |

Currently, Girls Aloud are the most popular girl band in Britain, no matter what the statistics say (and the number of records they've sold is amazing for how long they've been around).

Yeah but Sugababes have still sold more records.

Paul McCartney still releases albums, but he isn't currently the best selling artist in the world. The biggest ever are probably the Spice Girls, although by some criteria I'm sure others (including GA) have a claim. |

Bit like when Gareth Gates topped the charts with his first song which became Gareth getting the record for for the "youngest male solo artist from the UK to go straight in at number one with his debut single" which isn't so much a record as a vague description which is only one up from "being the first person to get a number one single called Gareth Gates." And Kelly Osbourne is the greatest female solo artist in history. It doesn't matter what "statistics" say, it must be fact.

I do think GA are more popular than Sugababes... They're definitely 'Britain's Top' at the moment.

Well to be honest Dermot didn't say the biggest selling girl group so..
I think the reason Girls Aloud get described as "Top Girl Group in Britain" is because the are arguably a lot more popular and have consistency And to be fair Girls Aloud sell a lot more tickets for tours I mean they had a sell out arena tour and I don't think Sugababes sold out their theatre tour so yeah Girls Aloud may not have as much record sales but if I was a record company I know who I'd sign as tours bring in A LOT more money than singles or albums

I agree with Lucky-Virgin - every time they say it on X-Factor I find myself talking at the tv going "no their not", which then normally leads to my dad telling me to shut up as I obviously don't know what I am talking about and it must be true
Girls Aloud have done well for themselves, but this "Britain's top girl Band" tag they flog to death isn't really true when Sugababes have more sales overall, more number 1s and more recognition outside the UK. I found it quite funny Sugababes are running with "Biggest Female act of the century" tags on the Girls cd single, I get the impression that the Sugababes camp are getting a bit fed up as it detracts from what they have acheived. Sure, they are more recognisable - but its hardly surprising when they are appearing on shows like X-Factor when Sugababes don't get a look in and they were launched from a tv show and Cheryl is a judge on the show On a different note - instead of booking reality show acts like Girls Aloud, Shayne Ward and Leona and acts signed up to Sony BMG (mentoning no names - Westlife) they should vary who comes on to perform. |

No they didn't. Sugababes last album sold over 500k, Girls Aloud were over 400k.
I'm getting my years the wrong way round... GA sold more the year they released their greatest hits, I think, but that was 2 years ago. Last albums it stands at:Sugababes - 493,000 Girls Aloud - 411,000 |

Girls Aloud are THE most succesful girl group in the country. It's quite ovious when you look at there 19 top 10 consecutive singles. Plus the fact that they managed to sell out both the MEN arena and London O2 arena TWICE is just a hint at their succes. Despite record sales, it blatently obvious girls aloud are the most succesful group.

There are loads of different ways to interpret what the biggest band is. Is it how many hits you've had around the world? How many records you sell? How many awards you've won? Even the most successful artists (e.g. Amy Winebox) don't sell that many singles (but can shift a lot of albums).
Girls Aloud have had more consecutive top 10 singles than any other girl band in UK chart history- I suppose that is the angle they took with that decision. |
