Why don't the groups stand a chance any more?
Last season the producers had to resort to manufacturing two groups from the auditionees who weren't quite good enough to make it through to the live shows. Even this year, they had a couple of last minute hand-picked groups on standby in case there wasn't anything else available.
In the first couple of series of of x factor there were two or three credible groups that were in with a shout. G4 is the obvious example who did rather well as a result even if they didn't win. But there was also Voices with Soul who would have wiped the floor with vocal talent and attitute with any of three groups competing this year. Video if you don't remember them here With two of the three groups out this year already, and JLS not likely to go much further, it seems that the rot has set in. From the audition rounds I get the impression there aren't that many groups entering compared to soloists. The alternative is that the majority of the groups aren't up to the standard required. If it's the first scenario then why aren't more groups auditioning? You'd think that a handful of decent singers would realise that they may not be the world's best soloists, but if they practised hard and harmonised together they'd have a chance of getting somewhere if they entered as a group. Even if they didn't win, if they got to the live shows it would be better than not even getting as far as boot camp on their own. Is this a reflection of a me me me attitude where people don't want to share in the fame and glory, or that singers can't be bothered to put in the work and effort it would take to make a group work? Whoever becomes the mentor for the groups draws the short straw, as unless something changes there just isn't the talent, dedication and experience available in that category. |

I just don't think established groups have enough faith in the general public to enter the competition now. Run of the road groups (Bad Lashes/Girlband/Hope/Eton Road) just don't have a chance - they never seemed to have done.
In comparison, specialist acts (G4/JLS/Same Difference) seem to appeal because they offer an alternative. When people see Hope and co. they see Girls Aloud. But when looking at G4 and co. they see something different, an alternative. And there lies the issue. From groups, people see the chance of having something different, something new. So standard offerings are often dismissed pretty readily. |

Girls won't vote for girl groups. That's the big thing, imo.

With a few exceptions, the groups just aren't that good. I hated G4 but they gave good group. They had talent in their voices and worked together well.

JLS I have reserrvations about. They come across a bit dated and cheesy. They somehow ned to throw off that perception but with groups it can be difficult to do. |

I would blame the sob stories - the show is all about the characters, the sob-stories rather than talent. I think people will be able to relate to soloists (male or female) rather than a group. Interesting though that the top group in 2005,2006 and 2007 were all duos. (Journey South, MacDonald Bros, Same Difference)
It may not be all the sob stories' fault but I hate them so much that I shall blame them for everything!!! :P |
