Hi all

I've made toffee for Hallowe'en the past couple of years and it hasn't turned out quite right. It tastes and looks yummy but is very soft ang stringy, almost like dense caramel. Does anyone make their own toffee? How do I make more firm and chewy.

Last year I made Bonfire toffee that was very similar to (if not the same as) this recipe. Not soft or stringy!

Practice runs are the best. You get to eat it all by yourself!

Edit: just remembered, it took forever to cook. I must have tried to block that from my memory!

1 x 400g(14oz) condensed milk.

Heat condensed milk in a saucepan over medium heat until it begins to change in colour to a creamy golden brown.
Pour into some paper cups and cool in the fridge

Makes 12.

OP'S Toffees.

500G(1lb 2 oz) White Sugar.
1 cup (250mls/8fl oz) White Vinegar.
2 cups(500ml/16fl oz)water.

Mix all the ingredients and heat till the water boils and sugar disolved. Then allow to simmer till the mixture is honey coloured. Do the same as you did with the above in the fridge and when set pour hundreds and thousands on the top.

Makes 20.

Enjoy and watch your fillings...

Ps if making treacle toffee use more unsalted butter in your mixture it makes it chewy and not hard. Also use white as well as brown sugar...
