Do you think we are more likely to watch a soap because we know what's coming up e.g. Liam's death, or would it be better if these major storylines were complete surprises? Sometimes I think it spoils the whole thing because we know exactly what's coming....

Spoilers can create buzz and get more people to tune in. I know in the case of HO a spoiler can create pages and pages of speculation! As to whether they literally spoil things, I'm unsure. I personally like knowing what episodes to be excited about, and which are likely to be big disappointments. But on the other hand spoilers never translate directly to the screen anyway, or there are nice little things that remain unspoilered and watching something without expectations can be very fulfilling too.

I am always eager to know what's coming up, and because I'm a pessimist I like to be prepared - so I tend to read spoilers for every show I watch

I guess its a bit like film reviews in the fact that they entice you to watch them and get people discussing them before they air. It's all about PR and promotion.

It goes further than that though, we are told weeks ahead what is going to happen which colours how we feel about characters before the story lines happen. So we have no natural build up to events. We can watch previews of often the best scenes on websites which then make the actual programme seem lame in comparison.

Knowing who leaves and when means I personally disengage from any feeling for the character (why worry about them if they are leaving anyway?).

I really think for me it is spoiling any enjoyment I get from the soaps so I try not to see any, but it's difficult not to know what is going to happen with the coverage the soaps are given these days.

^ I can see exactly where you are coming from, as my Dad is the same, hates to know what's coming up.

I'm completely different though, I love to read spoilers. I don't feel it 'spoils' it for me at all, as I get 'excited' and look forward to the story lines being broadcast .

I think that is just about right--there is so much exposure to the Soaps and storylines-
-I would suggest-to those who do not want to know in advance--
DON'T read the threads !!!------

While we who love to know what's coming hang onto every
word and LOVE it!!

I like hints but not the full story. I have little self control so if it is there I will read it. I am going to avoid all forums for the christmas storylines as I want to be surprised.

There was so much published and posted about Liam's death that I didn't bother to watch it.

I personally like to know what is coming up in a soap but not in too much detail. I still like to get the "shock" factor now and again. I love it when soaps hide endings and culprits until it actually happens on screen. I can't wait for EE next week becuase of this! + I also enjoyed watching how Liam died last week on Corrie.

some interesting points of view on this - thought there might be i dont' want to read spoilers really - but just choosing a paper or magazine in the shop - they are all over the front covers.
I think that was a good point that they determine how you feel about a character before you are meant to know their future story lines...let the debate continue

I Think the spoilers make the following episodes after the explosion/murder/mugging/whatever more interesting because you mostly know what happens but not what happens next.

Don't get me wrong I would defend your right to see as many spoilers as you want but I want the same right not to see them. Here on DS it's fairly safe as spoilers are usually titled as such or hidden but I can't go into a garage or shop selling magazines or newspapers without seeing headlines of what is coming.
