We went out yesterday to get sand and seed for our birds, and went to a pet shop that we have never been to before (came highly recommended) - anyway, the vast array of animals that they had was remarkable, and they were all in rude health (proper family run place).

We got as far as the puppy room, and this wee man kept looking forlornly at us.

Long story short, he just had to come home with us, so I am again a dog owner (been ten years since I last had a dog).

What a lovely wee puppy - a very understandable reaction imo. May you both have very many happy years together.

He is from Heathrow Bird World in Wraysbury - they have an incredible selection of birds (as the name would suggest) but they also have reptiles, rodents and puppies - their prices for animal feeds and bedding are really good, providing you don't mind buying in bulk, and their livestock all seemed really healthy, clean and sociable.

He just melted our hearts, and is even settling in quite well - wee bit of a sleepless night last night, but not too bad considering it was his first night.

He is a Jack Russell/Chihuahua cross - should be an interesting mix

Thanks Samantha - the fella at the pet shop reckoned these wee ones were small enough for him to chew without being a danger - but I must admit that I have already got the whole family into the habit that he has only water and toys available when he is unsupervised, and that he only gets treats like these when he is being watched.

I think the wee shoes have bitten the dust for now anyway, I got him a toy sheep tonight (nearly as big as him) and it has been getting tatter since - that, and Little C gave him a Scooby Doo soft toy of hers, which he seems to love too (and I like that idea, as it will smell of her and hopefully help the two bond - she hasn't been around animals much, so is still at the novelty/slightly nervous/excited stage with him, and he is just wanting any and all attention that he can get).

I've turned the heating on tonight, as it got a wee bit parky last night, and being out a wee while ago it feels really cold out, since the place has warmed up, he has been on the sofa next to Mrs C, sprawled out like Lord Of The Manor.

Somehow I reckon he is going to get well and truly spoiled

I would recommend that you give that place a look if you do decide to go for one, as they were really friendly, willing to answer questions and offer advice, and all their animals seemed to be in clean cages/tanks etc and seemed to be used to a fair bit of human interaction.

I've never heard of a cross like that before, so I doubt it was even an intentional breeding, but he is so cute, and a right wee character - a wee while ago, he was prancing about the kitchen chasing his toy monkey, creeping up on it on his hunkers and then pouncing at it -- bold as brass, and barely the height of nonsense.

He did well last night, and settled in his bed after about 20 minutes of padding about the bedroom, and then we heard nothing of him for a good five hours - then he managed to get round behind our bed (between the head of the bed and the wall) and got stuck (silly sod) - so we woke to him whining when he realised that he was stuck. Other than that, he has been really good - he knows what no means, and recognises the family, whilst being a wee bit less sure of visitors (no bad thing); just the toilet training bit to crack and we are sorted

Tell your wife, I think she is right, by the way tinman

Yay!!! Minor victory!!! He has just needed a pee, and went right to his mat next to the back door - so that was a wee doggy choccy drop and loads of praise for him - hopefully he'll remember that now, and then we can get the pad outside over the next week or so.

He's lovely, FC, and I know he's found a good home with you.

Can I throw a spanner in the works re pet shops though - they often sell puppies from animal farms, and the poor wee things are often sick.

There are so many lovely "second hand" dogs desperate for a kind home after being thrown out by their previous owner etc - please give a thought to them.
Mongrels are also cheaper and healthier, too.

I agree that there are a lot of dodgy pet shops going about, and there are a good many that I wouldn't even consider buying from - the fact I only got to know of this place through a solid recommendation helped make the decision easier.

However, I must also agree that there are a lot of animals that are looking to be re-homed, and a great many of them come with most of the hard stuff done (toilet training etc).

Anyway, just to bore everyone even more, here are a couple more pictures

Its a hard life

I'm awake!

See, I wondered that - he's got a fair old tail, and a hell of a long tongue, yet his paws are quite small (I tend to think of puppies with big paws as being the ones that will be bigger dogs.

Chihahuas are generally really small (think rat on a rope, and you'll know what I mean )
