hi i have a vmc pc with lg bluray/hddvd combi drive, the sound is output through an audigy card with coax to my sony str-ks1100.

the problem i am having is on discs that have true hd sound the amp will only output in stereo, some discs dont have standard compressed DD 5.1 (unless on audio description, which is very annoying!)

is there anyway for me to get 5.1 DD from my setup?

thanks in advance for any help.

HD audio formats are only carried over HDMI, optical and coaxial will not pass these signals.

As far as I know you should still get the DD5.1 core from True HD over coaxial.

Can't you set your player/soundcard/amp to bitstream?

IIRC, PCM is always just stereo, but bitstream should give you the 5.1 soundtrack.

If some discs really don't have a 5.1 soundtrack, I'm stuffed too, as my Arcam amp doesn't do audio over HDMI.

You should get the DD5.1 core from True HD and full bitrate (1.5Mbit/s) core from DTS HD MA over optical and coaxial.

no, on this discs specifically there is english pcm 5.1, ehglish truehd 5.1 and audio description 5.1 . the ponly one that works in full 5.1 is the audio description, i presume as it is the only dd 5.1 track.

ive just checked my only other bluray discs, casino royal and that actually has a 5.1 DD audio track, whereas this doesn't! doh!! that is a bit stooopid if u ask me

edit:just noticed all the other posts thanks guys im gonna have a good playaround with my amp and see if im being stoopid!

Strange as you should be able to get the DD5.1 core from True HD as it is included in one of the mixes, sounds like they have messed up big time.

well ive got 16 other hddvd discs and the other blu ray disc (as above) and ive never had this prob before.

doing a bit of digging

"The BluRay standards require discs to have at least one of

* DD
* DTS
* LPCM
"

well this discs has truehd and lpcm, but no DD boo!

i hope the dark knight i have pre-ordered on bluray isnt the same !!!

The DD5.1 soundtrack will/should be in with the True HD, that's how it is mixed and laid out - you need to select True HD from the menu unless True HD is it's default soundtrack

Can't help thinking it's a configuration setting somewhere, bitstream needs to be selected not LPCM, if these settings are selected then it sounds like a duff disc and they have cocked up big time.

I don't own this disc so I can't try it out - Sorry I can't be any more help.

I can confirm that Spiderman 3 BD will yield a DD 5.1 output from a PS3, as we watched it here a few weeks ago (picture via HDMI to the projector, sound via optical to the amp).

I vaguely recall having to fiddle with some settings...

Not familiar with arcsoft media theatre so just did a search, found a little info - I don't know how relevent this is to you though.

What about HTPCs?

There is still no bitstream solution at all. So there is no way to get your receiver to decode any of the lossless codecs if you have an HTPC. There is a new motherboard chipset from Intel, the G35 which can do 7.1 LPCM over HDMI. Problem is, there are only 2 pieces of software that can play Blu-ray and HD-DVD. One is Power DVD Ultra, unfortunately it downsamples everything to 16/48 before sending it to the driver. The new player, ArcSoft Total Media Theatre does not downsample, but it also does not work with G35 motherboards.

The only other way to get the new codecs from an HTPC are analog connections. As previously stated, ArcSoft is the only player that won't downsample your audio.

I too can confirm that Spidey 3 plays DD 5.1 fine. My Logitech 5400 speaker set doesn't support HD audio, but it recognises the fact that the signal contains the standard DD or DTS 5.1 and plays it as such perfectly.

This is the same whether I use fibre or coax. The player is a HTPC.

I use PowerDVD 8 Ultra. Older versions do not support the audio streams properly, and I wouldn't mind guessing that is the problem with your playback software.

Dark Knight MIGHT mean having to download an update for your PC software or blu-ray player - but that's nothing to do with the audio stream as such.

hmm intresting, i shall have to download powerdvd and give it a go then. one of the reasons i went for arcsoft is because it officially play hddvds aswell and intergrates into media center.

can i ask you what sound card you have?

cheers nev
