Telly upgrade

I have this telly…
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-42PF.../dp/B000EYGF60

Is this telly…
http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/710037/index.html
…a big step up in terms of quality?

I'd like 1080p 24fps 100hz for running my PS3. Thoughts?

The contrast ratio is a lot better, that should improve the image noticeably.

Significantly I see the Panasonic is Full HD supporting 1080p, and isn't the other one only HD ready with 1080i max?

yeah it is… 1080i max

I'm a bit puzzled with all the HD-technology…

Is the 1080p picture 'full hd' going to make a pretty substantial difference?

I just haven't noticed that 'wow' factor watching my current set that I get when I go window shopping in RicherSounds.

not really a healthy review, but however at least it has HDMI

have you connected the PS 3 up with HDMI ?? and played around with the picture settings ? Even sticking in a Star Wars dvd and looking at the THX set up may help.

you could wait untill it blows up or sell it second hand even to re-coup some money

thanks for the replies all

i have had the ps3 connected both directly through hdmi, and i tried last night with my new onkyo 606 - putting it through that - and the picture is just really disappointing. ive had it a year, and paid £850 for it back then. don't know what id get for it - was hoping around £500 locally, and the panasonic set ive mentioned i would get from currys (i have a voucher for there) for £710

what i need to know is if the jump in picture quality would be worth the extra ££s

i also want to know is 'full hdmi 1080p 24fps' from the ps3 on bluray and selected games going to be a lot better than the telly i have just now.

Unlikely - the last few that have sold on ebay have all been well under £400 (£300 to £360). Even the ones listed with a Buy It Now price of £425 haven't gone. So, unless you know somebody who's prepared to pay over the odds for it, knock a further £150 to £200 off your expectations. The TV isn't being manufactured anymore - Amazon don't even have any second hand sellers of it listed.

I think most people have cottoned on to Philips poor reputation nowadays...

To be honest, I would suggest you go and see what the Panasonics look like, I don't like Philips, but the few I've seen have pretty good pictures on them, a Panasonic may make no improvement (or even be worse).

For the amount of money you're going to lose, I think any possible improvement may not be worth it?.

Jamie48, do you ever feel that folk on here just don't bother to read properly?

How many times did you write that you ALREADY OWN THE PHILIPS!!!

Sorry to shout but farking 'ell guys, c'mon pay attention

The Panasonics are great, IMO. They are plasma for a start which means no more LCD type image lag. I also think they do a good job with their picture processing so SD looks good too.

The Philips 5521 you already own was their entry level set. The 5520 was the model before. It was the first time Philips really got their prices down to compete with the mid-market brands. They cut a lot of corners though, and I think it really shows in the quality

I think if you manage to get the Pana you'll be chuffed to bits

One person (niall campbell) didn't pick up on the fact that he already owned a Philips and was looking at replacing it with a Panasonic. Every other contributor read and understood this perfectly.

Come on Chris, sorry to shout, but pay attention.

thank you very much for your reply - lol i dont know what i said to cause confusion - but sorry to anyone if i did!

what im curious about also, is if '100hz 24fps' 1080p is that much better than normal 1080p??

i know on SD broadcasts n so on itll make little difference - but I want to get the very best I can out of my PS3 playing 1080p 24fps games and blu rays within my budget.

Standard 1080p has a slight jerkiness as the TV system tries to show 24 film frames per second on a TV system designed to work on 50 interlaced images per second. 24 into 50 doesn't divide equally. 50Hz is a legacy that comes from the UK mains frequency

A TV with a 1080p 24 feature can display film based material correctly. Each film frame from a DVD is shown twice to reduce flicker - so the TV works at 48Hz. The result is smoother motion compared to standard 1080p.
