Made Where?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and I see there's plenty of lively debate on every subject. That's a good thing and it's healthy.

I'm in the market for a new LCD TV. One of my primary considerations is where the set is made. I realize there's no easy answer to this rather open-ended question, BUT, can anyone tell me or point me to a resource that will identify where the major brands make and assemble their TVs?

TIA for any info you can provide.

Thanks for the info on Sony....do you think all their models are assembled there?, or do they have different locations for different models? Most likely yes???

But thats only where they put it together, not necessarily where the parts themselves (the panel being the main one) are actually made.

From memory, I have a feeling the panel in my U series Sony (being the cheaper end of their range) is made in Slovakia?

I'm sure Nigel will confirm in due course .... at least for Sony TV's anyway.

my Sony KDL32W4000 is also made in Slovakia if I recall... can't check right now as wife watching TV) this isn't their lower priced model either (but as always they're lowering prices and so cost cuttings are made)

I'm sure I've seen other W4000's made in Spain.

Still they probably only assemble the parts so it's kind of irrelevent where it's 'assembled'

Maybe I have it the wrong way round?

Just trying to remember what Nigel had previously posted up on here.

Could be that the more expensive ones are Slovakian made and the cheaper ones are elsewhere?

Niiiiiiiigel ..........

Their main plant is in Spain (Barcelona), also Slovakia, and somewhere else in Eastern Europe? - however, they all just assemble the sets, the PCB's presumably come from Japan, Korea, China etc.

'Generally' the higher end sets are assembled in Spain, and the cheaper ones in Slovakia - but this can easily change (and may well have?). I suspect it's just down to production capacity - if there's no capacity in Spain, they can use extra capacity elsewhere.

The Sony sets are all pan-European, and the only difference is the mains lead and instruction book supplied - which they do occasionally get wrong!.

My Pioneer Plasma has a "Made in the UK" label on the back.

I don't know if it means assembled in the UK or manufactured.

If you are talking only about LCD, then i'm not sure where the new Pioneer sets are made.

I'm pretty certain it means 'assembled' in the UK.

Thanks for your input so far, please keep up the information flow, I'm really wanting to make as much of an informed choice as I can. I realize that the parts of any TV are probably made in as many as 10 different countries, so it's near impossible to even figure that out. However, I think I can (somewhat) figure out where it was assembled.

Thank you for those that have already posted and thanks to those who will.

Why does it matter so much to you?

Presumably an ethical consumer.

Or an immigrant whose native country is currently at war with another country - and one which manufactures/assembles AV equipment.

Some years ago our company was fitting a Kitchen for a Jewish lady, part way through the installation I got a very irate phonecall asking why the Rep had not told her that Neff was a German company & refused to have her new oven fitted. When asking about alternatives she rather liked AEG & asked where they were made; quick as a flash a Savy fitter shouted Italy......she said ok & was delighted with her new oven, I did not have the heart to tell her that it was in fact German

I realize that in a global economy that nearly everything runs full circle and that simply buying "American" doesn't do the same thing for our economy that it used to some 30 years ago. BUT, I also know that just buying the cheapest (AKA China (usually)) does have some net effect on us here in the U.S.

I drive a Toyota truck, and I also ride a metric (Japanese) motorcycle. I bought those brands because I believe them to be significantly superior for the money to nearly every other brand out there. I will do the same with my TV purchase if I find it to be the case. I'm just trying to educate myself.

I'm not anti China or anti any-country, I just want to try to do my part to keep our jobs and companies here as strong as possible. I understand that it's not often cost effective in the short term to do that, but I still want to try.
