DVD Recorders - Can Anyone...?
i_love_tv

...recommend a DVD Recorder that;

1. Can play Divx files

2. Has a USB port

and

3. Can play MP4 files

?

I've just spent hours using Google, E-Bay & Amazon & haven't found one yet!

The playing of MP4 files seems to be the stumbling block.

Anyone know of one, either via the net or on "The high street"?

Thanks to any help given.

Isn't MPEG4 essentially just for HD?, and as the chip set is much more expensive than MPEG2 you're only likely to find it in an HD DVD player (BluRay only now).

It may well happen though, how about say, Panasonic make an HD freesat PVR with DVD. They do it for freeview, obviously with no HD. That would have the chipset, and they have the other features already.

It's a big assumption that they would make such a device, and even that they would be allowed to make such a device by Freesat - and as all HD is currently HDCP protected, you wouldn't be able to record the HD anyway

OP, can we presume that most of the above files come from a PC somewhere? If so, would a streaming media player be the simplest answer - or even a PC - and then just buy a basic DVD recorder for off air & freeview?

As DivX is essentially MPEG4 anyway, wouldn't most of those players work with .mp4 files?

Spot on from Nigel. They would love to make one but have hit their heads on a brick wall as they would only make a hdd/dvd recording device for freesat and they are not being allowed to by freesat, something to do with piracy issues.
