SD and HDMI connections

I have read that some people watch their SD pictures through Scart and their HD pictures through HDMI. How is this possible?

Does it make the SD pictures better?

Some people prefer it, there's no advantage using HDMI for SD, RGB SCART is just as good - but try it on your particular setup.

To do so, you need both HDMI and RGB SCART leads, and switch between them with your TV remote as you wish.

If you connect a DVD player, for example, via SCART to a HD TV then the TV will be doing the upscaling. SCART being strictly analogue Standard Definition.

If you connect the same DVD player via HDMI then chances are it will now be the DVD doing the upscaling and not the TV. There may be exceptions or you could actually set the DVD output to SD over HDMI. But chances are if the DVD gives you the option to send 720 or 1080 signals over HDMI then it has an upscaler built in.

It then becomes a matter of personal preference which upscaler you think does the better job.
