I know I have to adjust my television picture setting to 'NTSC'. But, what about my DVD player? Do I need to adjust any settings on that?

Out of interest, what's the difference between 'NTSC3.58' and 'NTSC4.43'

NTSC 4.43 is also known as NTSC-J. It is a "PAL-type" NTSC in that it uses the same sub-carrier colour frequency as PAL (in comparison to ordinary NTSC which uses 3.58 MHz as its subcarrier).

NTSC-J (4.43) is used only in Japan. NTSC-M (3.58) is used elsewhere in other NTSC countries.

NTSC-J looks slightly better than ordinary NTSC because it has a better signal/noise ratio.

You might need to adjust the output but check the manual for that.

Japan is also Region 2 so you will not have a problem with region coding.

Unless the tv is old its unlikely to need any changes- it should switch to NTSC automatically.

Settings on your dvd player will depend on what make it is.

The video output usually has options for PAL/NTSC/AUTO.

Best quality will be achived with AUTO setting.

If your tv is old and the NTSC is black and white you can change the output to PAL.

If the player is a budget model it may not even give you these options and will only play a PAL format conversion which wont be quite as good quality as NTSC.

Some models of Toshiba (not sure about others) come with the video preset to PAL and will simply eject an NTSC disc.

If that happens you need to change it to AUTO.

I have a Sony DAV-DZ260. The manual doesn't say anything about an NTSC option, just that it plays Region 2 DVDs.

No.

There should be a setup menu and from this you should find a video or picture menu .

There you should find the PAL/AUTO/NTSC options.

If you cant find one I would expect a Sony player would be automatic in switching formats

I just downloaded the manual and PAL/NTSC is something you dont need to think about if you have the player connected via HDMI and set to the best output your tv will accept- eg: 1080i/p.

That's a relief! I recently ordered the Japanese Grindhouse box set before checking whether my system could play it or not. One of those impulse buys, you know? "Oh my God, it's going cheap! Buy now! Think about the consequences later!"
