I have a Tom Tom G0 700 Sat Nav in the car , the other day the wife grabbed the in car charger for her bluetooth headset instead of the Sat nav and proceeded to charge up the Sat nav with the headset charger

It flashed on and straight off and now nothing appears onscreen , there is a front light that illuminates but with a black screen and no sound .

Is this now fried or is there some internal protection or fuse .

I have tried the reset button on the base but it does diddly squat .

I did google and found a post that a GD700 had a black screen ,( no mention of it been used with the wrong charger) and it said something along the lines of

Remove the back , remove the 2 boards and disconnect the battery ( internal I assume )

I cannot see how or where there are any screws to take the back or front off to try this as a fix

Anyone offer any advise prior to listing it as faulty , spares or repairs on eBay

Thanks

What's a GD700? Or do you mean GO700?

Anyway I rather suspect it may be beyond economic repair. If the charger that was accidentally plugged in has popped some components inside they may be a b***er to replace. How good are you with a soldering iron? Anyway if there are no visible screws on the back of the device then try poping off the grey plasic surround for the screen.

It prises off with a bit of help from a screwdriver (they used to sell different coloured surrounds so it is meant to come off). I suspect you will find the screws under there.

But my old original GO (one of the first generation) failed exactly like yours has. Totally blank screen even though the charge light comes on and no amount of resetting it will get it to work. In the end I bit the bullet and got a new one.

I have a feeling you may have to do the same. From what i can gather on specialist GPS forums the x00 series has pretty much been abandoned by TomTom and it looks like the x10 range is going the same way.

It seems TomTom will not be releasing the latest ver 8 software for the x10 series now so I very much doubt the older x00 series will be updated at all.

Its the Go 700 model

Thanks , yes I popped the silver surround and can see 4 screws to take it to bits

I will take it to work later on and have a closer look

Is it worth DL the latest software before taking it to bits ?

Any suggestions welcome

Thanks

The light glows red but doesn't want to charge or recognize when the proper charger is now inserted .

Not sure what the latest software version is for the x00 series. I know the last version released for the x10 series was 7. something. Not sure if they ever released 7 for the x00.

Mind you if the thing is cream crackered it's a bit of a waste of time downloading anything anyway.

One good thing about the early GO's is that everything is on the SD card so as long as that is safely sat on the bench away from the device you won't screw it totally by opening it up.

I wanna give it a try , Its my thought that possibly the software as become corrupt , and DL is a simple way of testing this theory , clutching at straws I know , but if I try nothing it wont get fixed .

Is there an Sd card in the GO 700 , there is no obvious slot , unless its internally mounted

Just checked and .....

The green light on the car charger illumintes and the greeen light on the front of the unit illuminates when the car charger is attached , as soon as the charger is removed the green light goes out on the unit as if there is nothing in the battery at all

Hmmmm.

I thought TomTom introduced internal storage on the x20 range. My 510 certainly had a SD slot. But seems the 700 does indeed have an internal hard drive.

The problem you are going to have of course is if it is cream crackered you may not be able to actually load any software etc on it!

Have you got the CD that came with it? if you are lucky that will have an image of the software as originally installed. If it does then attach the GO to your PC. If there is any vestage of life in it then the internal drive should appear as a drive in My Computer on the PC.

If it does then you could try copying the CD image over. If it does not then you are stuffed. At least with an SD card you could pop out the card and put it in a card reader to copy files over.

I really cannot do anything with it at all

As it seems to have no power from the battery to start the unit up to load any software on

I am going to ask on the TomTom forum and see whats its worth ins current state , and if owt can be done with it

I guess its not worth fixing in this throw away society
